Well, I'm not seeing the hook for multiplayer then It had better be a really really good campaign story...at least equal to LoTR Agreed, my bad for over-generalizing. A key diff between online vs tabletops is connectedness. I am physically there AT a boardgame so I can't just take a dump whenever I want. Its just different connecting to a server. I suppose co-op could be like a special event alto I do believe that this is a more playerbase dependent feature. Btw, thanks for replying...clears up all the smoke
This was in the back of my mind all the time while watching CH trailers. Now, I've finally figured out what was gnawing my leg. I've done a quick search of the forums as well but no gold. So my burning question is: Why is there no monster dialogue ??? Surely not all monsters just grunt, chirp, scowl, fart... ? I'm supposed to be on an adventure ! Gimme my dialogues ! I wanna know what the hell those minions are thinking ! On a more serious note, I'm not talking about audio. Its the balloon text that's missing, that's what adds flavor to an adventure, right ? right ? It could be at the start of a turn, with time-based balloon text (user option to switch off) shouting "Trespassers !" or "Who goes there !" or "<insert enemy race> scum !" or "For democracy !". Or it could be trigger based, especially when the AI hits certain combos and goes "Charge !" or "Take that, and that, and that and finally that" or "Shoryuken !" (erm, this might be copyrighted, my bad..) or "3746 hit combo !" or "oops, I gotta go take a piss...timeout" What say you ?! Also, I've figured out something else that was gnawing my other leg. Which is more of a question: Does the board editor support mazes ? edit: mazes as in 'hidden tile effects' or 'hidden movement modifiers' not observable by participants. I could try to move 2 east and end up 2 south with lava damage etc... The idea is to encourage participants to think and remember the terrain as opposed to simply seeing everything at a glance.
...how so? What would level differences add to multiplayer, or what does the lack of level difference preclude, that you were looking for?
I'm looking for the incentive for multiplayer. It's got nothing to do with levels, per se. The big question here is "Why would I want to play multiplayer ?". If BM's premise for CH is to have fun, how is that implemented in 1v1 MP that is different from MP games that already exist ? I'm not seeing that in the dev diaries despite the new approach. That's all.
I think the answer to "Why would I want to play multi-player?" is: To have fun. Are you asking if there are incentives for winning, other than the satisfaction of beating your human opponent? I find this sort of odd. It's like you're asking "Why would I want to play chess?" Do you want to know what makes Card Hunter different from other games in terms of multi-player? The game itself is pretty unique, so that's one thing.
If said incentives for MP and the incentives for single player are synonymous, why would I MP ? I don't have a choice in chess but I do have a choice in an online game. If you take Urban Rivals for example, which is primarily MP. A game progresses so fast that the satisfaction of winning the human opponent isn't really there. If you take Poxnora, its the reverse. In both cases, when the player is given a choice NOT to MP, or when the entry level is too high, customers tend to flood the single player lobbies...
So, if you prefer single player, then stick to single player. The incentive to play MP is if you like MP.
Yeah, basically. Don't forget the sequence here: 1). The developers started with single-player as their priority, while making sure that the code and cards work logically for future multiplayer plans. 2). Then masses upon masses of people begged for multiplayer. There's not much else to say, because (unless you haven't read any dev diaries) the content of play speaks for itself. I suppose we come back to the other part of Zoorland's question: "what does the [status quo] preclude, that you were looking for?" Or it could be that we're missing the point. When you referenced lateral and vertical progression, was there likewise an issue to dampen "what you were looking for"?
I... think that's actually a little misleading. From one of the earlier dev diaries... Having played the multiplayer (and I really should do a short writeup of it this week), I pretty firmly believe that it's the "core" game. There's just a lot of cool stuff that falls out of playing against a smart human opponent who has put the time in designing his or her own party. I realize PvP isn't for everyone, but there's things you can do to "soften" it for people who are more PvE inclined! That said, I agree with you guys that the point of multiplayer should be that multiplayer is fun to play, like all games. Even so, I am not against there also being some mechanism that provides, say, item or gold coin rewards for playing multiplayer. I've previously posted about that at some length, though, so I will spare you that here.
I play multyplayer because the challenge not only the incentives on it. Is not the same to play vs a guy than a machine.. huge diference there, your EGO grows a lot winning vs people
My statement about "making sure that the code and cards work logically" was supposed to indicate parallel thinking, but I see that I didn't get all the words right. Roshirai triumphs in the Arena of Accuracy. +15 Truth Points (TP) and a Silver "Thank You."
First off, woah ! Did I just open a can of worms ? My bad... I think that there are 2 somewhat related threads here which are confusing people. What I am trying to understand is the hook for MP. When MM replied in my earlier post that "All levels will be equal for multiplayer competition", to me: it means BM only provides the level playing ground and nothing else. There is no hook, period. <pause to let reader absorb> <pause for readers go pee...> <pause for me to go pee...> Now, if BM says "CH provides private lobbies for casual pvp", then there is possibly 'fun' involved. I might wanna spend some money to be with friends bashing thru a custom adventure or just plain flex my muscles to show off my LoTR troopies. In this case, yes...Sir Knight, Ystin, Timaeus are correct. I like MP (with my bffs), so I MP. The hook here are my bffs, not CH. (fyi: bffs are a highly variable, volatile customer base) <pause to let reader absorb> <pause for readers go drink...> <pause for me to reply to an annoying email...> What about the players who spend good money who want to play MP competitively ? Where is the hook for Raising, Roshirai or other players who might wanna spend money on CH ? (Before someone replies again: "The incentive to play MP is if you like MP", pls participate in actual competitive MP games and understand how high the virtual entry level is. Its a whole different arena...) On the subject of lateral and vertical progression, I am interested in the control model for lateral progression which is quite a new topic in games industry right now. I think that CH has the propensity to be something more than another TCG if this is handled properly (beyond just human playtesting)...
Ah. I see. Or I think I see. You're wondering if there's going to be tournaments held, if there will be rewards. Leaderboards are another thing that I think would be an answer to this question. Why should we want to play multi-player, aside from having fun. Is that sort of correct? I didn't understand that you were talking about high level play.
Lol, alright then. I can't answer the question though I imagine there will be leaderboards at the very least, and with how much attention esports has been getting, if this game garners enough attention, I'm sure something along the lines of professional competition is inevitable. I'll wait here with you for some other people to respond. If the information is known, we are bound to receive it.
Okay. There was some mention of setting up a lobby system, but I can't seem to find it in basic text, and it might have been in a video only. This was part of a general discussion of multiplayer, so since I can't seem to find it, I don't know what other topics were discussed. But WHETHER all these things will exist (tournaments at all, rewards at all, leaderboards at all) is a topic of conversation, yes. It's just like everything else in this game: don't worry that there WON'T be any such features just because we haven't heard much about them yet. We're slowly gathering information as Blue Manchu releases it. And yes, giving out card rewards for multiplayer is one thing us forum-goers have debated, too, so Blue Manchu knows we're curious. Hopefully somebody else can find the discussion I missed. Oh, and looking at that thread reminded me: So they've had a varied route to getting here.
Two statements enter, one statement leaves! Jon mentioned something about Magic Online-style "event tickets" for use in entering multiplayer tournaments with prizes. Like brave Sir Knight before me, however, I can't seem to find the thread that mentions that. As a stopgap, I was planning on organizing unofficial multiplayer league/tournament stuff for the beta when that arrives, so look forward to that.
Oh, and there's that two-headed giant skeleton in the trailer. I'd like to know about him too, he seems like a cool guys.
