I'm basing it on Flaxative's tournament too. He used 10 minute timers and it seemed to keep things moving and be interesting. The only reason I'm choosing 11, which you feel is some weird arbitrary number, is I think the first turn of trait cycling / board analyzing should be slightly longer. Even with 3DC and checking LoS on the board and other things I barely have time problems. If we have a ton of timeouts again then I'd consider 12 minutes for the next one (although I actually want to run a rapid fire series of 5 minute matches and see how that goes). Anyway... I'm curious what people think should be the map usage. I definitely don't want a single map for each "stage" because it is a Swiss format. I'm thinking maybe like 3 or 4 maps that are randomly selected before each round? Any other thoughts? WarCraft 3 uses a similar system of 3 or 4 random maps for their automated Swiss tournaments. That would also maybe have repeats, which I'm not sure if it is good or bad. People could create teams to work slightly better with a small number of maps than a large set, but it could also get a bit boring maybe? Any thoughts?
I would go with the 10 min timer, that last final was great and one of the reasons was the timer, all went down to the last second, and 10min makes ppl have to think fast (and good) and play. About the maps why not have a pack of 6 maps, and have each player pick a map and have a third map randomly selected in case game goes 1-1 if its best of 3?
That wouldn't really work for a Swiss tournament. Maybe for the finals, but let's say there are 20 participants. That means each round there are 10 games going on. Each round lasts 30 minutes (11 minutes at most per player + 5 minute break + 3 minute scheduling) and then each person is then assigned another opponent for the next round. This continues for X rounds (5 or 6 most likely) before the final results are tallied and the finalists are declared. Since each round has so many matches going on it would be a nightmare to have each opponent pick a map and then randomize what map they would play on. Simply having everyone play on the same map at the same time is the easiest way to deal with it.
By the way, one reason there were a lot more time outs in SLG's tournament than in mine was that my tournament mostly used maps people were familiar with. I don't know if this has been mentioned yet.
February 22nd is most likely the date. Probably about the same time that SLG's tournament was hosted (seems like a good time for many time zones). Maybe plus or minus an hour from there though, I'm still looking into it. Want to finish this poll (https://forums.cardhunter.com/threads/poll-on-upcoming-swiss-tournament-item-restrictions.5216/) in the next day and then come up with the map rotation. I've started working on creating sign ups with Challonge as well, so everything is coming along.
The winner for the item vote is: "Epic (or lower) rarity on all items. Only one of each specific item in an entire party." I'm unsure what to do for map selection right now, but it will probably be a small collection of maps (3 or 4) that contestants know will be in rotation for the battle. Before each match I'll randomly determine which map we play on. The question is really now coming up with what 3 or 4 maps we should use. I want a decent variety that supports multiple builds and is still interesting. Since we don't have to worry about WW/WWE nearly any map should be a valid choice, but suggestions wouldn't hurt.
Okay, since I haven't seen any real strong discussion over what maps to use I'll select them. The map format will be: "One of these 4 maps will be randomly chosen immediately before the match. Each round will have another one of the 4 random maps, but no round will repeat the same map twice in a row." The maps are going to be: Deep Forge, Melting Glacier, Celestial Temple, Gladius Triple. There will be 11 minutes on the map timer. Each person will private message me their build with 1 sub character if needed. I'll do the full write up in a new post later today.
It depends on how many people sign up, but past tournaments have given 400ish pizza to first place. Check here for all the info: https://forums.cardhunter.com/threads/swiss-tournament-info-sign-up.5279/
