black screen when starting through steam

As others have posted, I'm getting a black screen when I start the game through steam. The recommended solution of manually changing the xml doesnt work, nor does restarting or reinstallation. I just get the black screen, though oddly enough esc still brings up the menu. This is on windows 10.

I should note that subsequent attempts to start the game dont even seem to write to the log at all. If I delete the log file and then start the game, no log file is created.
