Hey everyone, Card Hunter's first tournament of 2016 is now live! http://forums.cardhunter.com/threads/cardhuntrian-festival-a-co-operative-tournament-sign-ups.8663/
Christoff, FinalCheetah wasn't referring to the tournament. He was referring to the casual team battles that had just taken place (and I'd written about) -- specifically that first one which was just silly and nuts. $:^ }
I've now read the whole guild thread. Hoo boy. (I'd already read the first post; then everything since former Principal Inkfingers dragged me in, kicking, screaming, and wondering if my campaign-so-far warrior had a Parry before the final blow; but now I've caught up from everything before, too.) Silly, silly. $F^ b Two old concerns seem minimally unaddressed up to this point, though. First: Throughout the years, I just keep coming back to the duck-billed platypus. Such a funny, crazy design, that one. $E^ b (~lol, smh!~) Then, second: So, what is or was this proposal anyway? I don't recall it ever surfacing -- and there are hundreds more posts to read between my induction and the present, thus uh yeah, I'm done reading finally, lol. Still something in the future? Something put on the back burner indefinitely? Something cancelled? Something borrowed? Something blue? Spoiler: explaining a joke I don't know just what cultures understand what, especially when it comes to fun little traditions, and I know wordplay humor can manytimes get lost in translation, thus if you didn't realize there was an extra joke on the end of that last paragraph, I want you to be in on it, too! An old tradition for weddings is for the bride to wear "something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue" during the ceremony. I haven't put any special wedding significance on my question about what the big proposal is,* but since I was asking multiple choice involving "something ____," it just popped into my head to be funny and tack the wedding-originating non sequitur onto the end there. (*Unintended pun! A "wedding proposal" is often how an engagement begins before the eventual marriage! Ha ha ha.) On a different note, Flaxative mentioned a non-CH game (gasp!) that I haven't tried yet, but I'm in the process of checking it out, and I'm quite sure I'll wind up playing it quite soon. Its name is Habitica, alternatively (formerly?) called HabitRPG here and there. URL is simple, habitica.com, which redirects to www.habitica.com, which redirects to https://habitica.com/ ... $F^ D ... Anyway, (lol,) it encourages you to "gamify your life" by rewarding you for getting certain life tasks done that you set for yourself. Some years ago, some loved ones and I actually did this with a game we designed (and implemented merely via spreadsheet), and I tell you, the concept works. (I'm guessing Habitca's application of the concept also works since it appears to be popular and still going for sometime.) So yeah, I want to thank Flaxative for bringing this game to our attentions, and although I haven't played it yet, I already recommend it (so far) just from past experience. I might say more after I do play it for a bit. (At the time Flax mentioned it, one of his tasks he'd set for himself was to get one MP chest daily. Another person lamented never finishing RPGs -- to which yet another person suggested adding "Finish an RPG" to Habitica's To Do List. $;^ D So yeah, just food for thought. It can be used for serious issues like health or errands -- or for just keeping track of other silly hobbies. $:^ ] ... ) Weird detour I didn't intend to write, but I believe it's within the scope of Sorcerery. ~nodnod~ On that last note, however -- being within the scope of Sorcerery -- I have some bad news. It's not serious (in the grand scheme of things -- whereas obviously, it's very serious in CH!!!), but I hope someone here might be able to help. Hi. I'm Bob. I'm having a lot less fun with Card Hunter these days. I wrote something elsewhere that I think made me realize what the problem is. For the longest time, when I played -- once I finally left the safety of Campaign and peeked into the scary world of Multiplayer (before Co-op existed) -- there was a big, fun community online. People would help with mechanics; people would enrich the experience. Good stuff. $:^ ] Eventually, various people were recommending I get into a guild -- and the Sorcererers in particular. So, months later, what's the difference? I'm just sure the community hasn't left. That's not the issue. It's that when I play, that big, fun community is mostly offline. $:^ ( Soooooo... I'm not totally sure what to do about this. One option is always, "do nothing." lol - Another option is, play at a different time -- but starting 3:30ish UTC seems to be the best time for me to play. I've literally seen my attitude be different in-game when there are a couple/a few/no people I know online when playing -- and doing well, doing poorly, whatever -- vs. when there's a gaggle of geese honking all over the banks. I won't bother going into a bunch of detail, but I just don't like playing a fun game and barely having any fun. Y'know? It does bad things to my mind. $E^ D ( $:v / ) Eventually, I just get tired, and I'm just staring at a screen, replying to ppl who have the usual newcomers' questions, or indecisively poking around with build-testing, or just watching matches until I'm ready to crash to sleep. Funny thing is, I got a couple people to start playing, and they enjoy, and one even spent some real-life dough on some virtual pizza and content, and that's really neat, (yay, indie-support! $:^ ] ~nodnod~) but .. we're never on at the same time, and they soon stopped playing basically. $:^ \ So um. I don't know. Really open-ended question here. Thoughts? (Part of the reason I ask here is so that anyone else might profit from such a discussion.) (I wanted to write much less, but when I'm "missing something" as it were, my mind seems to just go around in circles, and it's really easy to ramble without quite knowing if I'm even making a point, let alone getting it across. Sorry.)
Bob, I would have quit a long time ago if it wasn't for the competitive aspects of the game. I know a lot of people would argue that it isn't good to play to win all of the time, but for a game that requires constant grinding, testing, and learning, it's a motivator that works for me. Maybe try climbing the elo ladder and joining a competitive guild. Fighting for the top ranks with your teammates, cussing with them about rng, and learning from each other makes my CH experience whole.
Meeting Farbs IRL, purchasing a figurine version of Wym, and having my item chosen as winner of the Aloyso Arsenal, would make my CH experience whole...but that's a long way away. One can dream...
Hi Bob, I'm Tom, and I go through this sometimes. You've asked a difficult question. Different people can have very different ways of having fun. Social interaction with friends seems to be a primary source of enjoyment for you, and you haven't been online at the same time as your friends. This may be self correcting, as many of us are in the post-holiday winter doldrums and not playing as much as usual, so they may soon be back in your time slot. Another possibility is to make new chat friends. I know this can be difficult because it requires people who both chat, and share your sense of humor, but new players are joining every day, and your upbeat posts in world chat make you easy to spot. The world is filled with millions of friends we have yet to meet. As @Han Lee suggested, you might also try to change up what you're doing. I played MP long enough to figure out I wasn't going to like it, but I still have fun with nudie runs and weird (often terminally weird) builds in SP. And sometimes I need to just take a break for a day or three. I hope you find a way to keep having fun here, because I like having you around. I'm kinda selfish that way, I suppose.
@ParodyKnaveBob : What you need is to take a small break. Your thoughts indicate to me that you are tired of doing the same old stuff and maybe win 50% of the time whilst not having the "fun people" around. Regarding the game: I see that your ELO dropped 200 points since the time I rejoined CH and I also saw that you have a very dry, non-innovative gameplay (sorry, I know it sounds rude). What you need to understand know is that if you wish to succeed then you must think outside the box and I did manage to get a build with zero rares to 1400 ELO. The question here is: Are you trying build a party that can tear apart a 1700 ELO guy or are you building one that can defend against any build, get those victory points and win? You must be very clear of what interests you and I would say that I honestly enjoy both the builds. You just need to play with the same build for a few days, weeks so that you can do with your build which no one else can do or understand. I saw a guy run Assegai on a blocking terrain heavy map. Quite ballsy but he could shred a few builds and also made me regret fighting him once. Regarding the community: There is a new feature called Co-op which lets you to make friends with random people and win some Legendary items while you play CoC for 2 hours. I played with a few guys below 1000 ELO. Yes their tactics took a toll on my health but still managing to get through to Level 8 of CoC with these fun guys I played with was worth the time and hey you know what? I won my 1st Searing Pain. I also spectate a few matches and make some friends there. I can mention a few, at least 5 in this past week. Although Robauke hates me esp. for my Enter Leave **** but I find that he is a very good person (no offense, Robauke). And lastly as Han Lee mentioned, trying to join a guild, contribute towards the GELO and climbing the ELO ladder is what makes you come back everyday. I seriously hope that you find fun coz losing a cheerful guy like you will be huge loss for the community. P.S.: Keep playing everyday to win the treasures and buy the Legendaries. Knowing that I can buy a Legendary whenever it shows up in the store brings a big smile on my face. P.P.S.: Dare to do it if you want it bad.
Here are a few options to consider PKB: Punishing Bolt, Punishing Strike and Devastating Blow don't care about the Lifesaving Block and are Very deadly attack cards. Oak Roots, Smoke Pin and Smoke Ring are extremely good strategy items. Oak roots can easily Deactivate an elf warrior with Elven maneuvers and will be forced to discard some good attack cards in the process and also if you're lucky then you may may find the Ranging Strike on the poor Elf. Smoke Pin/Ring gives those smoke bombs which bring with themselves a huge LOS advantage. Is also good against Volcano Builds Advanced Battlefield Training is also an extremely good and underplayed card which is only available to humans. It is a situational card but it gives you the advantage in so many battles. Medical Kit is a very strong item and it is also common and available in Level 21 store. Runestone is another honourable mention for a common arcane item.
Thanks much for replies, people. Been mulling things over. Gotta get some sleep now -- already past my intended time, but not by too much, fortunately. My To Do List says to give you folks real replies "tomorrow" (a.k.a. some 10-20-ish hours from now, wherever the sun is, related to your geographical position). See ya then. So to speak. $:^ P
OMG yes. You're finally watching something that isn't crap =) @Drake Arron don't worry about your request, comrade. We're all here for each other =)
Okay, update. I've played HabitRPG / Habitica for a couple days. So far, it's lovely, aside from some trivial bugs with known workarounds (refresh browser, press a button to auto-clear the site's data from your browser for a full refresh, etc.). I've just hit level 3 and have found two eggs, and let me tell you, I have every intention to hatch one of those eggs and feed it well so that I can ride gloriously into battle on my saddled Cactus. Startin' to tell offline friends about it. Fun, productive stuff. (Planning to get a real-life oil change tomorrow for more in-game experience and gold. I have my eyes on a better sword, some better armor, and maybe that sled shield for protection/transportation ha ha ha.) ~~ Yeah, I'm talking about it this way in order to influence you, the reader, to maybe go check it out. $E^ b I believe my best bet for keeping CH fun is just simply playing at different times. Different parts of the community are on at different times, and World gets amazingly quiet after 7-9 UTC, often before. Thank you, everyone, again, for the replies. I figured that I may or may not get any advice, and that other people reading could profit from it, too, but I certainly didn't expect "you're a swell guy" posts. $:v ] Aw, shucks, and all that. Heheh. To respond in full now: Spoiler: Han9 I have a both a competitive desire to win (at any cost) and a ridiculous desire to delight and surprise -- to entertain even my opponent, even in my own loss. These desires can be dichotomous, but these can harmonize, too. Problem is, "at any cost" can go to either extreme. Like the original Bejeweled Cultist who slew his own teammate just to step in and slay an opponent's char for even footing on the next round; this can lead to hilarious results. $E^ D Like the brain-meltingly boring battle I had some days ago (and told you about) against someone who used Volcano+Inspiring Presence to slowly, sloooooowwwwwly trickle away at my health and continuously build his/her own, drawing forever while I passed ad infinitum; this can lead to consistent, effective wins which are in no way "exciting" and "fun" as it were. So, all that said, I've certainly tried climbing the ladder, and I'll keep trying. Suggesting I leave the best guild in Cardhuntria?! "Surely, you can't be serious!" $;^ D But, whether fighting, learning, or what, I won't be cursing with anyone. $F^ , Ha ha ha. Spoiler: Sir Tom I don't know if I'd agree with "primary" -- I'm quite the introvert -- but where we are designed to be social creatures on at least some level, I've been going for too long without getting enough of that social fun, or at least it seems. (I expect this is partly due to offline difficulties I've been mucking through, but no need to talk about that stuff here.) Self-correcting post-doldrums... Interesting. I usually don't give much thought to the holidays, and thus 1. found more time to load up CH myself and 2. didn't even think about many other people probably disappearing moreso around that time. Thanks for that consideration, yeah. "I know this can be difficult because it requires people who both chat, and share your sense of humor, but new players are joining every day, and your upbeat posts in world chat make you easy to spot. The world is filled with millions of friends we have yet to meet." I find it difficult enough offline because, yeah, that whole sharing-my-sense-of-humor seems to be a rare thing, and I'm just finicky around people anyway I guess. My upbeat posts, hm? $F^ } Since I pretty much never see you chatting, looks like I need to start calling you Sir Lurker. Heheheheh. I'm surprised I don't see you more in World; I've seen your name on the list, and you certainly have your own fine brand of wackiness you bring to the forum! ..but yeah, when I lost most of my upbeatness a few days straight in CH, I figured it was time to say something around these parts. It's easy for me to not realize (or forget?) that I do make myself part of the crowd -- due to often not feeling part of any crowd -- but I'd say these posts are joggin' my realization/memory. $E^ J Spoiler: visak the thirteenth Hm. You seem to have a slew of thoughts on various matters, and I'm not even sure how they all connect, but I'll reply nevertheless: As it goes, since the new year hit, I'd been toying with parties and not finishing one I really felt satisfied with -- until a day or so ago. It's fun so far. I've the impression it's competitively sound, too, although it might need more work. And, I've gotten to Team Battle and chat it up with some fine folks for a couple/few days. Yay, fun. $E^ J Ironically, though, because of some stuff I've really really had to do, I've not played ranked since that day or so ago with my new party. I totally intend to return to the scene, but just gotta take care of some pressing stuff first. I chased the Fairy tonight, though, hey hey. (Solo as usual.) I'm sure I rambled around my point too much, sorry. Ironic point: I started having fun again just *before* my sudden couple day break. $;^ D Yeah, December was something. My first time on the Batford maps. I built a party that did well enough until the ranking meta changed on me. I then built another party that kept flying upward. I'd hoped I might actually see 1600 by the month's end! I'd already seen 1300, 1400, and 1500 in such a short time! ... and then the winter maps arrived. I just couldn't find anything that I both liked and could make work. Burfft, burfft, burfft. (Sorry, Punf.) I kind of wanted to experiment until I got it right -- and one day, I did repair my points quite a bit, but then lost it all again, ugh. It -did- feel like "same ol' same ol'" and not getting anywhere. Add truly terrible drain from offline stuff, and yeah, -200 rating, easy. As far as my gameplay, I don't take offense. I just wonder what you mean. Checking my history two months back, we've only faced off once, and that was in late December when, yeah, I had nothing special going and was really beginning to not care (again with non-CH factors affecting me, too). If that's all you saw, ~shrug~ okay. If you recall league games I don't, then remind me. $E^ } If you've spectated and I don't remember, lemme know that, too. ~~ At the same time, my view is that I'm a somewhat mediocre player who has crazy ideas that work sometimes; fwiw, I've no experience ever playing Magic or really ever playing any CCG before Card Hunter -- and I've never been able to really play competitively with anyone in video games before CH (quite a bit due to offline friends preferring more casual matches, co-op'ing vs. AI, sticking to the same stuff over and over despite having access to variety, etc.), thus it very well might be the ideas I think are out-of-the-box I merely haven't yet seen everyone else do already for the past fifteen years. So yeah. I don't take your comment as rude! Lol. I guess if I really try to put into words what I attempt to do... it's build to defend and offend. I try to synergize A. a defense against the dangerous majority I currently face with B. bettering my chances to land my offensive measures. I hear you on finding what interests and keeping at it until it does great stuff. I was incredibly pleased with my pre-holiday-update December team which skyrocketed my Elo. I was happy with some three October teams I had, too; one fun one that rose enough it couldn't compete anymore; then, a Smoke Bomb party that was inspired by Tronus and someone else talking, but I have objective reasons to believe I truly made it my own; then, of course, I had my night of zombies, but that wasn't really expected to win, lol. $E^ D Some reasons I like constructed leagues are 1. a player can build very specifically for a single map, thus one can concentrate on its specifics and not a whole rotation of maps, and 2. the somewhat oddball layouts can sometimes give oddball ideas for regular ranked play. $;^ b I indeed enjoy my 5,000+ gold currently sitting in my Keep. Any day now, there just might be that awesome Legendary in The Daily Deal which I can buy (and for the first time do da double dip). $:^ ] As for your "options to consider," I .. guess .. you're just suggesting various things for me to try so that gameplay doesn't get stale? I'm not sure on that, but that's my guess -- 'cause, y'see, much of what you mention, I've already done in spades. $E^ D (I even returned to one of the things you said here a couple days ago, before you ever said it, ha ha ha ha.) Heh, I must say, though, for awhile now I've wanted to create an ABT spam party but just haven't gotten around to trying. Lol. Regards, Sorcererers and non-Sorcererers, $:^ b
Um, thanks? I'm not sure how I feel about the way you phrased that. Halfway through my month long break I realized I could watch all the anime I wanted. =/ Now that I'm back at college, I'll have less time for CH (and anime too ) but I'll do my best to pop in from time to time. Also, there's one week left to register for my tournament? Why haven't Sorcererers signed up by now?
It's not bad, but it's not great by any means. It was, however, the anime that got me back into watching anime.
Welcome our latest three members, @Hidden Jaguar, @Username2Taken, and @Star Crusher! I'm also doing the unthinkable and am playing with an all-dwarf team @Drake Arron what Flax said Some other general / hopefully indirectly helpful tidbits: sprinkle in some exercise (a simple walk / jog around the block / campus / etc will do), try to eat relatively healthy, sleep well (8-9 hours, try to have a fairly consistent sleep schedule), and talk to people as needed. Also maybe try out Habitica / HabitRPG! and I'm still waiting on the stream! ?
Morrow fellow comrades! I'm proud to be a Sorcererer like you. Now I can use our marvelous sorcererous magic for our glory! I will fight to my last drop of blood to protect Cardhuntria against evil forces (or I will use Reflexive Teleport in case of danger ). Anyway, go Sorcererers!
