Announcing: Card Hunter PvP Spring Season

Hey, definitely appreciate the constructive criticism, and I really wish things were perfect on our first run, but ... wishful thinking, right? Next season!

In the meantime, I've received the "the season encourages sameness" criticism a few times, and I've promised to deliver meta content that doesn't reward spamming the strongest strategies. I can't launch a million contests at once, and I didn't want to compete with Blue Manchu's week of free leagues, but now that the expansion has settled in and things have calmed down a bit, I am announcing a deck building competition focused on coolness and inventive play.

I spend too much time playing as it is and it's routinely embarrassing to be on the list. It may as well be called "here's a list of people with no lives".

I have enjoyed Unholy Wellspring/Fireball trolling against numerous high-level players in recent days. THE RATINGS WILL BURN. >

 

Next time you might want to ask for opinions before you start doing it. There's a lot of little flaws that could have been fixed before you launched it -- no single person is going to see them all without some outside eyes on the topic. Plus, you might have gotten some help running it with API code to manage a lot of the work for you.

I do suggest that anyone who is interested in trying new builds or doing weird stuff to just play custom non-ranked matches... I mean, you don't win chests but you don't lose Elo either. I've been playing with weird stuff in custom games and it works well.

Yeah, there are definitely a few builds that can be super effective against top ranking players because they build a certain way. However, those builds do horrible against others... selective queuing and creating a counter deck is very effective in hitting someone's rating if you don't care about your own (losing matches that don't get you matched against your selected opponent).

 

Well... I should say that I'm not actually trying to troll the top tiers, I just want to cast lots of Fireballs with Unholy Wellspring. It's merely coincidental that the high-tier builds are most susceptible to armor-piercing fire.

 

Believe it or not, I did quite a bit of opinion gathering beforehand, and talked to the devs about what I could or couldn't arrange with them.

 

Well, maybe with the devs and stuff, but not an open discussion about the whole thing from the community. I think being overly secretive about things is just detrimental to development and iteration, but that's just me. :-P

 

I talked to members of the community. And now that this thing is running, i'm getting feedback for iterating. Most feedback thus far, by the way, has been stuff that I agree with but couldn't get support for off the bat (e.g. prize structure, API usage). Also, general feedback before the event has ever been tested is less useful than feedback gathered from people who aren't just guessing.

 

That's why you go with both! =)

The season is a bit long to really iterate on it. Wish it was a month less or something.

 

There will be more, and that is the only criterion for iteration. And, as i said, i DID talk to folks before setting this up! I'm getting the feeling you keep repeating yourself because you are upset I didn't consult you specifically? Or maybe trolling

 

Not me specifically, but with a lot of people who are currently participating and having issues with it.

 

I was really disappointed by this, having previously thought that I could make a come back after a bad week. Now I can just hope to stay in the top 10, which is fine, really. Honestly, this going to free me from playing in only a certain way . Now that I cannot crack the top 5, I don't feel compelled to play the most competetive deck that I can. Now I can play my eponymous elf warrior and happily jog up to dwarves who will wonder where all those attacks went. Liberating!

I actually know a guy that was struck twice by lightning on separate occasions. If I'm being honest, dude is a little weird but he seems to be doing fine.

I learned that TheShadowTitan uses a VERY similar 3DC build / strategy that I used to use (one Sub-Zero staff and lots of passing / playing defensive). =)
