Flametouched Spear and Token Cost

So I found a Flametouched Spear today and initially was intrigued with a Boiling Armor , especially on a non-mage item. But my major point of interest (gripe?) is that it's one of a handful of weapons that you actually cannot equip if you're the level of the item. I noted this because I was playing down in a level 12 adventure, and realized that even at level 14 you wouldn't have a major power token. This is at best interesting and at worst frustrating, no? I can understand if you get loot 2 or 3 levels above your level that you can't use it, but a level below?

    Just my 2cp.

Yes, I saw the table, but it still strikes me as a tad silly to have an item unusable until two levels beyond its level.

Theoretically, for players who really have trouble with some crazy hard module, they have the option to grind and level up your character up to 2 level beyond the module level and still get the experience for beating them. So say a module level 13 is fit for any character lvl 11-15. Similarly, a lvl 13 item can be fit for characters up to lvl 15. Coincidentally (or maybe not :) ) lvl 15 is exactly when you get your first major token.

TLDR: Rule of the game is anything fit if lvl +/-2

It might well be that this item won't drop for players whose level is too low to use it. See Jon's explanation here. The game mechanic governing this is the hidden introductory level of the player/item/card.

Flametouched's Spear's intro level is 6. It is incorrect in this assumption. It looks like a lot of people misunderstanding what that mechanic actually imply so I will just excuse you two and rant a bit here.

Let's start with card's intro level. An intro level of a card tells you how complex that card is. Basically, they should have named it "Complexity level". The idea of having that level is to not overwhelm new player of crazy card interaction just yet. Therefore, the majority of card will be simple and have a low intro level. Intro level has nothing to do with how powerful a card is. Obliterating Bludgeon actually has an intro level of 1. Because it is that simple: bash someone in the head really really hard.

But you will never find Obliterating Bludgeon on a lvl 1 item anyway (I hope not). So once again, item level has nothing to do with the item's intro level. An item's intro level is decided purely by the highest intro level of every card in that item. In another word, an item's complexity level is equal to the level of the most complex card in that item. Here's the only place where intro level actually matter. Most low level item should be relatively simple with just bash and zap. However, some legendary at relatively low level do contains card that is mechanically complex but not necessarily powerful. New player may get lucky and get this item really early on, and intro level prevent that. But once that player has reached higher level, seen enough card from the monsters, he will be comfortable if these item drop

Once again, since most cards are simple and not complex, most item are also have a low intro level compared to its own item level. There are only few cases in which item has an intro level higher than its own level, and its most likely a legendary/epic. Intro level does not matter much to the item drop system. The main factor in item drop is still the item level itself.

    /end rant

Ok, thanks for the info! Mind sharing what the source of this information is? Is it based on your own observations or do you have something more concrete to build on? It sounds like you have access to the hidden intro values of items and cards to be able to say these things.

The mechanics of it are completely unrelated to my actual point. And they actually back me up. If you can get it in adventures between level 11 and 15, and can only use it AT 15, thats a problem.

I dunno. When I play things like Borderlands 2, WoW, or Diablo I get things I can't use yet. It more explicitly tells me I can't use it because of my level, but it's the same. Seems normal to me.

Yeah, this. It makes getting to the next level an anticipated event - "oh man, can't wait to hit level X so I can finally use my kick-ass weapon!" sort of thing. I'm not sure if I'd be more sad to get something that uses major power tokens before I can equip it or hit lvl 15, get a major power token and not have anything that needs it.

Except in those games you can't use them because "the item is above your level." In this case the item can be at or BELOW your level and you still can't use it.

Just ask Jon, nicely ;). Anything else is available on the wiki. I guess Phaselock could put the intro level there as well, but I don't really feel the need to.

Ok, but I still don't meet the requirements. I still find it a reward to use later. Achieving something now to get something that will help me later makes sense to me and seems to be the intention and aligns with the games I used as an example.

When I play Diablo 2 I get drops I currently can't use that I can eventually use to help me progress to then get drops that I currently can't use. That feels like the standard state of progression. The main problem I had with Diablo 3 is that they didn't do that. They gave me drops below my level that actually weren't helpful. Then I was forced to go to the AH to progress which is boring. I felt like I wasn't being rewarded to progress through the game, but given gold by the game to go shopping.

All I see with Flametouched Spear is an item that (once I get to the proper requirements) allows me to progress.
