Useless Little Tips

These tips are mostly for more experienced players, so if you are new player, its best you view these links for help: How to Play and FAQ and Glossary.
Here is a list of a few little tips that may come in useful at some point while playing CardHunter:

Basic Knowledge:
To open the console press F1 or F2 on your keyboard and to close it press F1 up to 3 times.


Animation Speed
Most players know about the slider bar in Options that allows you to customise your animation speed from 1 (very slow) to 10 (very fast).
But few players know about the console command that allows you to set your animation speed even higher. To do this, first open the console, and then type "animspeed (any number)" 999 is enough to make every animated action you play, instant.
This is useful when farming in Singleplayer but I would recommend against it in Ranked, as it is useful to see what cards your opponent is using. Alternatively you can set your animation speed to very high but change the button in options that controls cards to "Pause Enemy Cards" so that you dont see your cards played but do see each of the opponent's cards.


Check Items on the Wiki
While playing Ranked, you may notice a bar between the image of a card and the play-effect, this shows the type of card it is. But then to the right of that you can see the name of an item - this is the name of the item that the card belongs to.

Spoiler: Example

If you have been playing for a long time, you have probably memorised many items and the cards that are on them, if not you can use the wiki to search up the item to give you an idea of your opponent's strategy and what other cards to expect.


Collection Analysis
You can check out your progress towards a complete collection. Just head on over to http://www.stexe.com/util/collection-analysis.php and follow the instructions.


Ctrl + Right Click the Terrain
Often the Line of Sight isn't obvious. Especially at range. You don't need to move to find out if LoS will be acquired. With or against wizards you want to know where you or they can see, you can do this by hovering over a specific character.
But another way to find the LoS is by holding the Ctrl key and right clicking on any square on the board, this shows the LoS of a character that would stand on it, the only downside of this is if a barrier is placed down this method does not show what a character who can see though the barrier could see. A simplified way of looking at this is that the game creates a third player who cannot see through either player's barrier.

Spoiler: Example

I am using the three wizards, I just placed down the barrier but when I Ctrl + Clicked the game did not allow me to view the LoS through the barrier.

You can also see the LoS if you were standing oh a terrain attachment, all you have to do is Ctrl + Right Click on the border of the terrain attachment and the black border.


Peek at Source of Discard
Open the console and type the command "verbose" to toggle verbose output mode. When on, the game dumps more information to the console. In particular, during a battle, the source item of an opponent character's discarded card is not viewable through the battle log, but with verbose mode on, that information is available in the console.


Removing Intractable Options for Screenshots
When taking a screenshot, for example of a map that you have created, it would be wise to remove all of the extra boxes that do not affect the board/ map.
You can do this by opening the console, and typing "toggleui". This removes all of the intractable options and only leaves the board.


Screenshots
When players take screenshots, they usually press the Prt Scr key on their keyboard (or the alternative for macs) but there is a built in command to take a high-res screenshot of the current game interface that you are seeing in the game, and then save it to your computer rather than having to open MSPaint and save it that or some other way.
You can do this by opening the console, and simply typing "screenshot". This taking a screenshot of the current game interface and opens a new window for you to save it somewhere on your computer or removable media.


Searching your Collection

The search filter allows for regular expressions (regex) as detailed on the Wiki.
Some simple examples are elaborated on below:
Multiple Items
While searching for specific items in your collection when customising your characters, you may want to bring up multiple types of items.
For example when creating a vampire character, you may want to bring up all of the vampire items, in this case you can name each of the main vampire attacks, but then rather than searching for each one separately you can separate each card with a "|". Example being: consum|of darkness|invigor|enervating
Only Items
To get cards without other cards with the same name one can just use hat. Example, ^parry finds items with only parry, not subtle parry. (Also can be used for only handicaps (^handicap) to avoid purges and such)
You can also search for items with cards or item names ending with X. Example, burst$ finds cards or item names ending with burst, not Rad Bomb.
To sum it up: ^start end$
Excluding Text
You may wish to exclude specific text from your search results. There are two methods to do so: a negative lookbehind and negative lookahead. A negative lookahead to find Tomes of the <whatever> but not Tome Of The Withering Source would be, Tome of the (?!withering). A negative lookbehind to find Crushing items but not Advanced Crushing would be, (?<!Advanced) Crushing$. Multiple filters can also be aggregated together with "|". For example Tome of the (?!withering)|(?<!Advanced) Crushing$. The "|" can also be used to filter for multiple words e.g. (?<!Advanced|Novice) Crushing$​

Slide Back Direction
The mechanics are explained by an accurate description and diagram in the Comprehensive Card Hunter FAQ and Glossary, click here. But you don't need to refer to the diagram during a game if you remember a simple rule: The direction is only straight when the offset is closer to the straight than the diagonal. During a game, count the distance along the straight and then the offset to decide which direction is closest. Some examples:

• 4 squares east and 3 squares north = diagonal. Closer to the diagonal than the straight.
• 4 squares east and 2 squares north = diagonal. Equal distance to diagonal and straight so diagonal wins.
• 4 squares east and 1 square north = straight. Closer to the straight so straight wins.

Personally I find the easiest method of remembering slide back direction is remembering the T shape in the diagram and copying it onward if the slide back card has a range larger than 4 - if a character is hit like this they slide back on a straight line, in all other cases they slide diagonally.


Track Traveling Curse
When the opponent plays Traveling Curse, it travels into one of your characters' draw decks. The draw deck of the character that receives the curse will increase in size by 1, so if you're paying attention you can tell who the curse traveled to. (You can also tell to which opponent character one of your curses travels, of course)

Ctrl+Right Click the Terrain
Often the Line Of Sight isn't obvious. Especially at range. You don't need to move to find out if LOS will be acquired. With or against wizards you want to be ctrl+right clicking the terrain all the time. Control+Right click on the enemy wizard, control+right click in the area you are going to move to check LoS. You should be Control+right clicking twice as often as you left click, if not more. I learned this by watching CT5 twitch videos. You should do that too.

Check Items on the Wiki
You are now pausing Enemy cards. At the bottom of each card is the item it belongs to. This combined with the wiki can help you predict your enemy's strategy. That 'meaningless' card just played tells you what powerful cards to expect. You should have the wiki open and ready to search for items you're not familiar.

 

Though if you have equipment.csv open you can easily search that, without having to navigate internet pages. Always up to date too.

 

Ctrl+Right Click Underneath Terrain Attachments
Isn't it annoying that when someone attaches a terrain card to the map, you can't get line of sight from that spot anymore? Nope! You can! It's just more difficult. Ctrl+Right Click inside the tiny little sliver of a gap between the attached terrain and the little black border of the map's actual terrain square, and you'll still get line of sight from that location.

Slide Back Direction
Knowing how Slide Back works can make or break a game. The basics are simple: When the target is lined up on a straight line from the caster then the direction of slide back will be straight. Lined up on a 45-degree diagonal? Then the slide back is diagonal. The tricky part is when the target is neither on a straight line nor a 45-degree diagonal.

An aside, as for searching your collection, | works because any regex works.

the maximum quantity of one given item that can be stored in skarl is 3. Anything more will disappear from here, so while you do get 100 gold, you won't be able to buy your items back

happened to me yesterday with 4th and 5th Brin's Spiked Rod

 

So far I knew about all the tools listed in this thread, but a problem I have had for a while is when you search your collection for items with cards such as "Bless" and "Parry" but when you search them up the game returns those items AND items with cards like "Martyr's Blessing" and "Subtle Parry" which do not have the actual card you are looking for.
Does anyone know a method of bypassing this?

Like Pyrious said the filter supports common regex. With this you can do some fancy stuff. For instance:

• Bucklers that have a Q but don't contain an F or a J: Q[^fj]+Buckler
• Items/cards/text ending with Sneak or Sneakers: Sneak(ers)?$
• Circlets that have at least two descriptive words: (\w+ ){2}Circlet
• Ends with Crushing excluding Advanced: (?<!Advanced) Crushing$
• Tomes of the whatever but not withering: Tome of the (?!withering)
• All of the above: Q[^fj]+Buckler|Sneak(ers)?$|(\w+ ){2}Circlet|(?<!Advanced) Crushing$|Tome of the (?!withering)

 

Thanks rinco, would love to add that but I am not sure how to simplify/ convert this into the style of text that I have in the first post. Any ideas?

Your Parry and Bless examples are easily fixed with ^ and $. So to simplify/convert I would suggest this:

Join Two Games At Once
The multiplayer interface will let you simultaneously look for Ranked Match and a League Match. Unfortunately you can only play one at a time so you will end up losing the other due to timeout.

(has anyone tried resigning the league match and rejoining to get back into the ranked match?)

Check Online Status
The game will confirm your online status whenever you see the loading animation with the Dragon. So if you suspect you've been disconnected just click on something like League Standings (but not League Schedule). If you've been disconnected you will be prompted to reconnect.

 

Firstly don't join two games at once, by automatically losing one you should get reported. Better way to check online status is to type anything into chat this can be used in the middle of a match.
