So I am sure you are wondering, what the heck am I talking about? Well, the fact is that certain Epic/Legendary items are in fact INFERIOR to a more common item. Let's have some examples... Wild Trickery/Superb Trickery/other Elven Trickery items Why on earth would an elf want more Wild Run and less Elven Trickery? I mean, seriously! Wild Trickery is a very disappointing skill, there are RARE items I would use INSTEAD of this legendary one, some of which are TOKENLESS. Suggestion: Make tokenless. Use Dangerous Maneuver instead of one Wild Run. Oakenheart Shield/Steel-Rimmed Buckler It's an epic item, the Mighty Oakenheart Shield! Oh wait, that rare shield you picked up a while ago is BETTER. That makes sense. Weak Parry is inferior to Parry, not only by dice roll, but also by the card draw. That simple 1 card drawn is a huge factor in a game. Twisting Shield/Hexagon Shield Slippery Shield/Hawlic's Surging Shield Without going into a rant about Hard to Pin Down and Surging Shield block, the simple fact is that the more common shield is MUCH better than the rarer one. They really need to SWAP the effects of the two cards- this has many benefits for the game and shields in general. Luke's Iron Hand/Ring Of Appropriation Need I explain why one is better than the other? The difference in price and availability is staggering. There are many more examples out there, feel free to add them and share the outrage. I think that it is ridiculous to get a legendary item which will NEVER BE USED, unless you are lacking of the superior more common version.
As being stated before. Rarity != Better If you think if it the other way. Having a better item being more common. Means that more people will have access to them
To a certain extent I agree with you that it's odd that there's legendary items that are straight, clear downgrades to common items. On the other hand, I really don't like the idea that all the best items are legendary, so I'm at some huge disadvantage every game cause I haven't put a billion hours/dollars into CH to get them (if I'm lucky!) It seems to me that legendary items should just be...different, than lower rarity items. Simply open up new playstyles, have weird, strange cards on them that you can't find elsewhere, that aren't BETTER, but unique.
These items are not different, they don't offer new playstyles or have weird strange cards on them. They are neither better nor unique. There are examples of good and unique legendary items. One of my favorites is Brutal Agility, which I have two of for some reason. On the other hand, I really don't like the idea that all of the best items are common. I have put a million hours and countless dollars into this game just to let my legendaries gather dust whilst I use commons because they are better - I don't want to put myself at a huge disadvantage by using my legendaries.
If most best items were hard to get, the game would be pay-to-win or play-obsessively-to-win. These are bad things for a game to be. While nice for those willing to pay or play a huge amount, it would be nasty for everyone else. The needs of the many should override the needs of the few. This makes the environment healthy and thriving for also the power users and whales. I'm sure also they'd rather be a little less well off in a popular game than super powerful in a desolate landscape. Blue Manchu has deliberately chosen to make very playable items reasonably easy to get. I really don't think they're going to change this basic tenet of the design at this stage, nor should they. This principle confuses us who are used to the usual RPG classification of items. Legendary items are best, period, and immediately replace anything less rare in the players actively used inventory. This works well in SP but not so well in a multiplayer environment where the ease of collecting a nice item is a huge factor in how pleasant the majority of players find the system. It is not mandatory to use the traditional item quality/rarity system where there are good reasons not to. Let's not cling to the past too much, we're living in the future with aeroplanes flying into space now!
IMO, epic/legendary items should not suck horribly, and we have many that do. I don't believe Trained Tactics or Elphala's Healing Ring should exist. They're reasons to rage quit if you find them in an epic chest you've bought, which I suppose makes the game less pay-2-win, and chests shops more pay-2-get-shafted. I believe all epic/legendary items should be at least as good as their common/uncommon counterparts of the same token requirement. They needn't be more powerful, but they should at least be legitimately playable. I really doubt this will ever happen in CH. On the other hand, some epic/legendary items are more powerful than they legitimately should be. I doubt this will ever change either.
