I'd rather they change the name to violent overswing and change the art to violent overswing's. Then remove the current violent overswing from the game and give all monsters and NPCs the new and improved version. I doubt it will have any impact on single player balance and it's so much cleaner than having two extremely similar cards.
As mentioned, I agree that "Controlled" is a weird name to have when it exists only in reference to another card. (And new players now see "Controlled" before they see "Violent," if ever.) Just for the feeling of the game alone, I'd agree with either of your solutions.
I suggested in august that the name for Controlled Overswing would be changed and I still think that it should be named simply as Overswing. I don't like that the art would be changed into the one that's in the Violent Overswing; I hate the fact that some different cards have the same art. It just seems lazy design. (e.g. Whirlwind/Hurricane)

Also, Whirlwind/Hurricane may not have changed (Note: Hurricane only appears in two battles in the entire campaign!) but a bunch of other cards were updated appropriately with some more of Ben's brilliant art (EG Disorienting Block/Acrobatic Flip). I think that all things considered, Hurricane is a pretty low-priority change when it already looks good. And once again, you have like 4 people each giving up to 50% of their time to keep this game afloat. So take it easy on the things you "hate".
You do like to controvert all the time in these forums, don't you Let me refrase then: I like the fact that opponents in the SP have unique cards with unique art. When they changed the Acrobatic Flip to Disorienting Block, I liked it, but missed the old art. Then when I realized that the monkeys were still using the Acrobatic Flip, I was really pleased since the old art didn't go to waste and the card fits really well with the nimble primates. I hope they don't get rid of Violent Overswing or Controlled Overswing, especially the art.

Maybe change Shield of the Tumbler's name into Trickster's Guard (or something) and make a new legendary shield with 3X Acrobatic Flip called Shield of the Tumblr, er Tumbler. In the meanwhile, let's think about changing Controlled Overswing's name. Crushing Overswing, Mighty Overswing, Wicked Overswing... sadly the art of Controlled looks a little too tame for the items it appears on. As stated above.
