[Question] Does the AI pull punches?

I realize that it's hard to make an AI play perfectly in a complicated game--and you probably wouldn't want it to, even if it could--but I've noticed a couple of times when the AI seemed to make obviously dumb moves.

For example, I've seen several cases where it will attack my dwarf fighter with high health and good armor cards visible, passing over a shot at my elf wizard with lower health and less or no armor.

Once, after a monster moved, I passed, and the monster played another move that exactly reversed the effect of the first move. (This may have been decisive, since the battle was down to my priest chasing a trog wizard in circles around the map--I won, but if he'd had 2 more move cards that could plausibly have changed the outcome.)

So I'm curious--is the AI deliberately programmed to make blunders, or do these things make sense according to some obscure logic I haven't picked up on?

From what I gathered, yes the ai is designed to make occasional mistakes, not just to make it less difficult but to make it less predictable. For example sometimes gary doesn't move when it would be advantageous to do so, so you might think he doesn't have any, but if you drop an enviroment effect under them, then they move.

Not sure if attacking the non-ideal target is a result of the intentionally added mistakes or just the way it chooses targets though.

There have been a couple times when an enemy had giant attack cards that could have easily obliterated the mage I had standing next to it, but they didn't use any. They just passed the turn and let me kill them. So, yeah, I assume the AI is designed to take it easy on you from time to time.

I've noticed Amy has a tendency to start battles with Team Heal. And there was that one fight in the Goblin Woods where the shamans spent several turns casting Energize on each other.

It's clear the AI tends to stick to a scripted plan rather than take the opportunity to kill a player character that's low on health. Whether that's deliberate or accidental, I can't tell - but it's certainly saved my bacon now and again.
