If there are network troubles while starting a game, I could end up going up against a placeholder figure. That's an issue all to itself, that it doesn't try to reload it in case of errors. But even if you do end up going up against the placeholder figure, you should be able to tell what direction it is facing, but you can't since the front half and back half look identical.
I am not sure about what a placeholder figure is but don't you get the facing of a character by hovering the mouse over the character? (should display a green arrow showing the facing)
That's what I assumed ^^ Well you can try my tip next time this occurs to you, should give you a temporary fix. edit: I add a screenshot in case it can help
I just ran into this issue, only the figure is one of my party members. Any level I play, this character's figure no longer loads (it's one of the standard Dwarf wizards, if that helps). All other figures (mine and AIs) load fine. I've tried switching parties, but that doesn't seem to help, unfortunately. EDIT: this happens even when I remove that character from the party, add another character, play an a level with the new party (everything loads fine), then re-add the original character. Still no figure.
