Every time I log-in, Gary is at the top of the screen with the "Blue Manchu gives you an epic item if you can beat this Treasure Hunt!" text. The Defense of Woodhome adventure has the glowing focus. I beat this adventure several days ago and already received my item. It was awhile ago so I'm not sure of the conditions that generated it, but I may have closed the window mid-adventure and then completed it later.
