Why Stormward Pauldrons? I am wary of encumber items, even with the tons of Telekinesis effects that you do have.
Flavor, and also because the dorf needs to soak a bunch of hits. The longer it stays alive, the more 20+ dmg hits it can land. It doesn't ever move by itself, so the encumber is fine.
If you're running Lt. Buckwell's Strapping, I feel that Spiked Tlahuiztli is better for you as Barbed Platemail speeds up your clock if they try to hit you back.
An update: I've switched to human wizards, since they can position themselves more easily and I can take advantage of Leadership to tune my hands. Play has been tending towards control rather than hack n' slash, because the poor dorf can't hold his own against two other dorf warriors (which I see a lot). The dorf is great as a movable wall, though, and can either block for the wizards or sit on cap for a few rounds.
