Card Hunter has a couple of characters that are based on chess pieces so I thought it would be interesting to build a chess board and pieces using Card Hunter characters.

In the original version I tried to make it as close to chess as possible, using all three guardians and a total of 32 pieces. I used Wyverns for Knights and Goblin King for both King and Queen. This is because custom scenario editor only lets me pick 5 different kind of characters. I put VP's under Kings and Queens, and added 4 VP's in the center of the board because center control is important in chess.

This version turned out to be a big disappointment. Pawns are way too strong and there are too many pieces on the board. Matches take ages and are boring. One of the main issues is having to first click the card, and then the character you want to perform that action.

Next I lowered the total number of pieces on the board by letting the player use his or her custom team. I got rid of queen piece because I think it's silly to use two kings for that. I replaced queen with a tombstone.

The problem is that there are not that many slow-moving weak enemies that I could use for pawns. This results in all 8 pawns rushing at you quite fast so you better be prepared :)

I find the guardians a bit boring and unsuitable (apart from looks) for this kind of scenario so I used other enemies instead. I made three different challenges: Undead, Goblins and Humans. Feel free to try them out if you are interested.

This topic and scenario still are both under construction!

I know this will never be something people will fall in love with but I wanted to try it out nevertheless :) Please post ideas for improvement or other comments. Thanks.

Wozargs entry for the Custom Adventure competiton also tried emulating the chess experience. It's probably quite hard to do, apart from thematically using the guardians. Maybe mixing monsters would be a good idea - I imagine you have zombies as pawns in your undead adventure et c. Maybe have lizardmen clerics as bishops, war monkeys as horses?

If you want the slow moving pawn experience, but can't get the monsters you picked for the role to hold still, then maybe setting the whole board to halting terrain would work? Then make stuff in the back be monsters that tend to occasionally teleport long distance or fly?

  5. Thanks for the link. I should have used forum search function before I started doing the whole thing :) That being said, me and Worgaz had quite a different design philosophy. He focused more on the gameplay and used chess only as a theme, while I tried to make it as close to real chess as possible (for example real 8x8 board). While mine is closer to chess, I think Worgaz probably made a more fun scenario, in both gameplay and visuals.

I tried to make mixed teams at first but it didn't work as well as I'd hoped, so I decided to give each race their own chess team. That wasn't so great either, so yea.. mixed teams might be better.

That is an interesting idea. I played around with something similar. I made parts of the board difficult terrain to slow down the "pawns" which didn't work really well, but I never realized I could make the whole board difficult terrain. That's a really good idea and might actually save this project. I'll definitely try that if I ever get around to fixing this mess. Thanks :)

    Not really but thanks. :)

Sorry, my brilliant was directed at Aldones's difficult terrain suggestion :p

  7. Ah, that explains it. :) I thought you were the kind of person who gets excited about all chess related things, no matter how boring they are :)

I have a soft spot for chess but it is not that soft. That said I really look forward to whatever you end up accomplishing with this!
