New Card Hunter player here (although longtime old-school RPGer) :)

I was playing through a 2-battle adventure ("Caverns of the Troglodytes") and I lost my fighter on the first battle. My cleric and wizard carried the day, and we moved on to the second battle-- I was surprised to see my fighter return to the party, good as new.

Is this standard behavior, or is it a lucky bug? (Or does my wizard possess a Wish spell that I didn't know about?)

Standard - everyone returns fresh to the fray in every battle. So basically, you just have to win.

If you lose three battles in a campaign, you can pay 15g to get everyone back with three lives, or just restart.

If you complete the campaign, you can play quests, one of which is to succeed with no deaths.

Thanks! A little different from the old-school "permadeath." Onward!

Permadeath doesn't really allow you to experiment with builds and is a bit harsh, so yeah :)

    Consider them "knocked out."
