Just logged in to this. Re-sorting the online players' list had no effect. 1 friend (Stexe, no surprise there) was online. To campaign and back to MP fixed the problem.
Just happened to me, I was getting chat sounds but chat didn't refresh until I tried to say something. Chat itself refreshed, but the player list did not until I refreshed the game. After that everything was fine.
