Were you perhaps to the side of the dog rather than behind? When you mouse over a character you can see all the squares (in sight) behind them shaded in dark green whereas the squares in front (not behind) are shaded light green. Also, if you were behind, you should have got the "can't block" pop-up when targeting the dog.
