5-minute match threshold punishes wrong people?

I just attempted to play a multiplayer match. My opponent made one move, then waited five minutes before resigning.

The fact that it was exactly five minutes feels awfully suspicious. At first I couldn't figure out why, if you're going to wait 5 minutes anyway, you wouldn't just concede immediately, rather than force your opponent to sit there with you for 5 minutes. Unless it's just a jerk move to make me wait just as long as they do, the other possibility is that they were hoping I would be the one to get bored and quit.

Either way, it's frustrating that now instead of having people sometimes instantly concede a match (which was merely annoying but not time-wasting), instead I may have to wait 5 minutes for them to concede, which is much more irritating and time-wasting.

It was probably just this one person as people still instantly resign and really the only thing this might do is cause a shorter timer for that person thus more likelier to face a computer opponent next time but then again most that instant resign do not care about that.

btw - how much does it add to the timer if you resign early? It would be good if it was exponential (i.e. multiplication of the previous extra added wait time, so a rage quite wouldn't be a biggie, but 3rd-4th consecutive resign aiming at lowering ELO would add double digits to the clock).

Yea if they make it worse for people that do this then more will simply find the right time that is needed to prevent extra time between battles and force people to wait more now.

Or if it's based on simply using the resign button people will go in with 1 character only such as a elf wizard and die quickly as I have seen this done before in some battles.
