Is there any chance that this game might use a chess-style time limit? That is, you get a pool of time in which to make all your moves, and if you don't make them all in that time, you lose the game?

Better still would be if it used "increment".. like maybe if you got a pool of 5 minutes, plus 15 seconds extra after every turn?

But I will say this, based on what I've seen on this thread and what I know of human nature: no time limit at all is a blank cheque to every troll and griefer in the internet's wide reach.

I'd just like to say that some of the most enjoyable games I've played have involved multiple 1-2 minutes turns by each player, in complex situations where many options needed to be evaluated. Several of these ended up being 35-40 minute matches, with both players running down the clock evenly. I don't think anything less than 3 minutes per turn will do justice to the nature of the game.

Also, I've occasionally been guilty of not realizing it was my turn (especially after multiple auto-triggers, traits, and cantrips), and chatting with the opponent or doodling on teh interwebz for a few minutes. I think one opponent ran me for five minutes that way... >_<

Yep, we have that already! Even so, it's possible to sit on your hands for most of your 20 minutes if you're going to lose, and try to bore your opponent into submission. It is uncool.

If the timer was not displayed until 30 seconds before time was up it may confuse new players. Just a thought. I do like the idea though as just today I waited 7minutes for my opponent to make his first move

As I type this, I'm waiting for this troll hugoiam to finish waiting out his 20 minute timer. He started with about 14 minutes when it became clear that he was going to lose.

Wondering when that turn timer will be implemented..

And he just surrendered with less than 20 seconds left.

Also, there really isn't any excuse for someone to need a full 2 minutes per turn. 1 minute is plenty.
It would be nice to have a pause feature with a few minutes (total, throughout the game, the way the current timers work), so that we can give ourselves some extra time when we need it. 2 minutes every single turn is just overkill.

There's a lot to be said for making the pvp fast-paced.

I actually really like the idea of a short timer with the ability to extend the timer a certain number of times during the match. Sometimes you may need a bit more time to figure things out but on the whole you should play at a decent pace for everyone involved.

I like the concept of a time bank which gets increased by a certain amount every turn.

I was about to choose 1 minute, but then I thought about those times when you might really need to think something through, so I went with 2 minutes. I feel like you shouldn't need more time than that. Whatever the decision, I just hope it's not less than 1 minute.

I honestly think 2 minutes is a fair time BUT I personally would like a pause function. Each player gets 1 pause a game and it lasts until both plays agree to unpause (for those scenarios where say I pause, go to the bathroom, my opponent decides that he needed to get a drink or go too, and if I get back before him he gets penalized for my pause) OR a minute after the pause is started the player who didn't start the pause can end the pause (to prevent griefing)

No offense, but this seems like it would be a waste of the dev's time. Seriously, it's not like matches take forever. Go to the bathroom, get your drinks/snacks, etc. before you start playing. I'd be annoyed if my opponent wanted to pause the game on me.

If they are adding time out I am 100% sure it would not be that hard to add a pause system at the same time. And things happen. Last night I was playing League of legends and had to go get the door. A pause would have made that so much better for me because I put my lane partner was in a bad position for about a minute. Obviously not a direct comparison but the point stands.

It's not whether or not it would be hard to implement, it's would it be necessary.

You should have said this at the start. Getting the door or something may actually be important, but the things you said about going to the bathroom and getting a drink, it would be like "Seriously? You couldn't do that before the match?"

Basically, I would feel annoyed at my opponents pausing the game on me. I mean, if you're expecting an important phone call or something, maybe you should wait for it before playing the game. As for those unexpected door knocks and whatnot, well, that's life. Maybe you should tell the people who normally knock at your door that if you don't answer right away to wait a minute or call you or something? I don't know, I guess I'd have to actually play with a pause system in place to see whether or not it would be too annoying. I guess I wouldn't mind it too much if people didn't abuse it.

Well it would be a once a match thing to begin with and after 1 minute you could unpause. At least in my scenario. It wouldn't be abusable really. Yes it would be abusable to a point where it would waste a minute but the pros far surpass the cons at that minute time frame.

Blue, how is a pause mechanic with a limited time bank any different from the current system we have now? Each player has 20 minutes to play throughout the game. If the match would only take 10 minutes, they can basically decide to pause the game for 5-10 minutes without penalty by just letting their time drop.

If their were 1 minute timers, the game would be fast. However, with such short timers, players would be deprived of time to think during the more complicated turns. A pause mechanic would solve this issue, giving players a few minutes to work with when they needed it, and allowing the rest of the game to be played at a faster pace.

If you can't stand the thought of having the game paused for three measly ass minutes, then I don't see how you can stomach the current system, where the other player is given the option to stall for a quarter of an hour.

Well, seeing as how the current system will eventually be changed, I don't see much point in even referring to it.

We don't even know yet what the time limit will be so we can't use "1 minute timers" as a reference because if may not be that amount of time.

Not really. Mooseberryjr's suggestion is for one pause per match. So, what happens when a player needs extra thinking time more than once in a match? That pause button won't seem very useful then.

I don't like it much as it is right now, but as I've said, the current system will eventually be changed. The suggested per-turn time limit of this thread seems good enough. I personally don't see much point in a pause mechanic.

2 minute timer with a 1 minute pause per match seems fair imo. It doesn't seem like a big deal, prevents stalling, gives the player a fair and fairly untrollable emergency break. There is no drawback to adding a 1 minute pause function if we also add in that 2 minute move timer.

It wouldn't really be a big deal in terms of gameplay, but the question is, is it worth the devs' time? I mean, is an extra 1 minute per match worth the devs taking their focus away from other things? That's what I'm getting at.

Anyway, I feel like we've talked about this too much now. I'm sure your suggestion will be seen and considered. :)

I wasn't talking about Moose's suggestion. I suggested a pause mechanic earlier on this page.

I suggested the pause mechanic because it supplements short 1 minute turn timers.

    Again, I'll quote myself.

1 minute per turn to keep the game fast paced. A pause time bank which can be used throughout the game for when we need to make hard decisions. This pause would also be nice to have to put the game on hold while soemone attempts to recconect (Assuming they make it possible for us to reconnect), and its also a nice tool to have for real life situations, like moose mentioned.

It wouldn't take very much time at all to implement, so I don't think ,"Is it worth the dev's time?" is a valid argument.

It's worth reiterating that I'd want more than one minute per match for the pause timer (as it says in my quote).
