What *is* a paragraph anyway?

    1) If you don't enter then you have exactly 0% change.
    2) The paragraph suggestion was to keep things easier for us. I don't think it was a hard-and-fast rule.
    3) Apologies if anyone feels we've been less than fair. :(

But, seriously, I'm going to take these reactions and use them to help me for when the game is ready to handle more Beta Keys!

Never said it wasn't fair - but to a lot of varying nationalities and ages out here we might have a very varied grasp of what is a rule, a guideline or just "something people say so contestants won't write a novel". It was the same with the contest run on reddit, and some of us brought up that issue then - and since the wording was used in this competion as well, I just figured it was actually going to be enforced. Please set a word cap or something next time so we know instead of have to guess... :)

A paragraph for those that don't know is a single block of text running 4-5 sentences.

(that being said, my entry wasn't likely to have won anyway - but knowing the parameters of the competition might have changed entries significantly)

I was convinced that a paragraph was 3-5 sentences not that the difference matters but if there is a rule of thumb for this i would like to know for sure.

Technically, there is no set number of sentences that make a paragraph. The word refers to the dividing up of a writing into groups of sentences. That's really the only "rule".

Dictionary.com calls a paragraph "a distinct portion of written or printed matter dealing with a particular idea, usually beginning with an indentation on a new line. "

    http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/paragraph?s=t

That said, maybe next time they have a "writing contest", they should either set a specific word limit or not mention any kind of limit. IMO, though, some people got a little too caught up in the simple word "paragraph," especially if you let it convince you to not even enter the contest. You could have just asked, since the contest ran a whole week long.

Well, I did say it usually is a few lines - which it usually is. No need to go into semantics here and bring up wikis to quantify stuff just to prove someone "wrong" - and as I said, there might be different linguistical rules considering we're from different part of the world. I'm not an english native speaker.

There were line breaks - thus, paragraph ended - and was turned into several paragraphs. If you want to go that route. Also, I wasn't aware that anyone didn't enter a competition based on this? So no idea where you got that from. No idea why you feel the need to White Knight this, you did win - and I don't feel like you shouldn't have. Just saying I don't like "loose rules". I guess that's why I like card games?

Max word limit would have solved it for everyone, was just annoyed the exact thing happened in the last two community competitions. Ask for a paragraph, and winners are all small essays.

Woah, hold the reigns, there! I was answering a specific question that was stated right above my post.

As to someone not entering because of their concern about it being a paragraph, I was referring to post #23 in the "RPG Story Beta Key Winners!" thread:

You yourself (Pengw1n) quoted and replied to that very comment.

Now I'm confused - I could have sworn you quoted my post, hence my reaction (d'oh)! I apologize for the confusion not catching who you meant not enterting, as you didn't quote that bit in the comment, still - the matter of what the rules actually are and how they are followed might be something that's better set in the future. That was all I wanted to say with my complaints, to be clear.

It's all over anyway, but it's always nice to keep threads clean! Nip/Tuck indeed ;)

LOL, I was a writing major before I was a college dropout. But I didn't drop out due to my lack of writing ability. I actually kicked butt in all my compo/writing classes. Damn the whole "we want well rounded scholars" thing that these colleges do, because math was a major stumbling block for me. That's why I jumped in the way I did..

But like Pengo said, it's over.... Unless someone else wants to start a writing debate with me... :p

The only difference between an "angry and impatient" fan and a happy and content one is DAT BETA KEY.

Would beta really help? Considering you would be wasting your time because they will wipe the progress? At this point it would be just busy work till the final product is out.

I just got in the beta and I am loving it, and don't see it as "busy work" at all. Besides, is there even a timetable for release? I don't think there is, which makes the beta the only way for anyone to play this game in the forseeable future.

Playing the game, whether it's complete or not, doesn't sound like a waste of time to me. No more than playing any other game anyway (whether virtual progress is wiped or not).

I think Ponyboy's right, I mean look at Mojo. Constant tears for weeks and then after Woz let him use his account he chilled out - playing the game transformed him from angry and impatient to happy and content. From angry Bale to Brony. Clearly Card Hunter is the solution to world peace!

Or people could learn patience and have discipline to hold themselves back from making themselves look like a fool. Sorry, i just dont get angry or frustrated that my neighbor has a sports car he burns out in his parking lot every day and i dont. I would love to have one, but im in no rush to do so nor will i make myself look silly in the process.

People have different levels of self control and patience the fact that some people handle it badly doesn't make their "pain" invalid it just makes it harder to relate to. Lets also not forget that this is a forum and people have anonymity to hide behind if they feel like overplaying their feelings a little which isn't good but lets just say people aren't always the same on a forum as they are in a 1 on 1 conversation or in person so over judging is not the answer .

I wouldn't worry terribly much about strict enforcement of a maximum length rule; I'm willing to bet most going on a crusade about it just want to improve their own chances and trim the competition. It's not about fairness at all :p
