Victory point before area damage???

I'm a new player and tried out multiplayer for the first time yesterday. So I'm still missing a lot of experience and was quiet surprised that I lost the outcome of this battle.

    This was the scenario:
My opponent has a cleric sitting on the only victory point on the map. In front of his cleric is my dwarven warrior beating her with a giant club, and my mage directly behind my warrior firing sparks of deathly electricity at her face! I get her down to pretty low health but.. she heals.. a lot. Scores are tied 4 - 4.

Next round starts and he's at 5 points now. I hit his cleric with my warrior and she get's below 5 health, which would have been enough for my mage to finish her off until he used some sort of invulnerability card rendering any attacks I would attempt useless. He now needs one more point to secure the game, so I place my mage next to his cleric and push her off the victory point using one of my damage dealing push cards. She hops back on with her last move card.

I have one last attempt, I place spikes underneath her which at the start of next round should deal 8 damage and finish his cleric off. I started doing my victory dance and clicked pass as I was out of cards to play. I was WRONG. He got the victory point before the damage got applied. Why is that?

Victory squares award victory points at the end of a round, while terrain and attachments activate at the start of the next round.

Good questions, the general answer is what Maniafig said. But two other errors to correct: Character attachments are not removed until the end of the "Start of round effects" stage, so your terrain would have applied damage while your opponent still had invulnerability and she would have taken no damage. Lastly stone spikes does 6 not 8 damage.

    Aha! Good to know.

My bad, pretty sure it was a card that dealt 8 damage though. I don't know the names yet xD

No worries, that would be some form of lava card.

In fact, Melvin makes this exact point in the campaign dialogue!
He complains that he lost victory at the last Cardstock convention because of how order of effects applies [Victory Points, Start-Of-Turn Movement Cards, Terrain Damage].

But it's actually a critical concept in gameplay, as it lets you hold a Victory Point that has a terrain effect on it, and then use a Start-Of-Turn movement to jump off of it before terrain damage procs.

This trick can make certain PvE maps a lot more interesting to run, especially if you've got lava pools dropping from laser malfunctions, or have a volcano-spamming wizard in party.
I imagine it can be quite beneficial in PvP volcano-spamming as well..

But yeah, I don't think I fully clicked to the turn process order until Melvin commented on it, myself, so you're not the first one who has had to stop and blink over a confusing outcome :D
