I admit i don't bother too much with the mechanics, but i got a strong feeling that Defender's Block behaves oddly when multiple targets are hit by AoE-Effects, namely bursts. I would appreciate a clarification, managing the card draw matters a lot.

Normally, when a character with def block is hit by a damaging burst and an ally within 3 as well, i believe the character holding the def block gets the try while the ally is unprotected, no matter wether that ally comes first in the party order. At least thats my experience since i started to pay attention.
(i got a vague feeling it was party order no matter what in the past until some patch came along)

Now when hit by another AoA-effect, a Purging Burst, triggering is seemingly determined by the party order. Is that right?

I think it's based on who's affected first by the burst effect, which isn't determined by party order, but by geometry. @Scarponi might know more.

"south" to "north" then, i suppose? I dont think the game differentiates closer and further away from the caster.

Each square in a burst has a priority number associated with it I think. I don't know the diagram by heart and it's not a part of the code I ever touch. Easy enough for you to test it with Ember Burst in a custom map, no?

The general answer is articulated in the faq here (under Defender's Block).
As to specifically what's the order in a burst effect... it's also in the faq here (under "burst").

I know that these seem like obscure headings to categorize an answer to a defender's block and burst question, sorry.

Didn't even occur to me it might be covered, thanks.

Center affects first is the unexpected solution, then southwest to northeast.
    Priority like this then?

Makes it rather tricky to trigger defenders while still purging the prefered character. A tiny disadvantage to start the game southwest.

    Sure thing.

Close, except you've got it marked advancing by east-west rows instead of north-south columns so you need to do a mirror flip of your numbers across the vertical axis (your 2, 3, 4 should be where your 2, 5, 7 are, etc.).

If I remember correctly from an incident in the latest tournament involving far too many Defender's Blocks and buffed Arcane Bursts, it works similarly to Team Walk. It defends the person with the card first, then checks party order from left to right. Then again, I'm not sure what order the bursted folk were in, so I might be wrong.

Pretty sure it works the way Scarponi outlines in the FAQ. That can easily coincide with the ordering you mentioned.

That was my theory for a good while. Only thing i can say is that if this is true for damaging bursts, then it is handled differently with purging burst.

According to Scarponi and Flax "pretty sure" Ative, this is the priority order, 1 being the targeted square.
