I hope that L&L's success (especially huge one) won't result in shifting devs' focus to newer game. I wonder when (I assume that it is still planned) are you going to release steam client. Nowadays Steam may be used to highly accelerate growth of the game's popularity, especially in case of great F2P title (for example small indie devstudio Frejam did this with their game called Robocraft last year).
Stexe mentioned a few of the reasons, but I made mention of others a few posts back. The equipment sets and card sets between the two games are different, and we're taking a different approach to the way map progression occurs. Since it's not a 1:1 overlap, it requires us to keep things separate.
+1 to everything Flaxative said. Card Hunter is an amazing game! After all this time, there's still new stuff happening with CH. The Humble Bundle placement last week was insane! I don't think it's safe to say that CH is dying. Card Hunter is still very much alive, and there's still work happening on the game. And from the stuff I've seen (and not allowed to talk about) it's really amazing.
We're still a short ways off. Ideally, we'd like to be out in late March. But, it's ultimately a matter of "When is the game ready?". We don't want to ship a game that isn't a fun, ideal experience. So we won't commit to a date if the commitment means delivering a game that's broken, or where things just don't work the way we intend.
Card Hunter's steam client will probably hit this year. Preferably in the first half but no guarantees—there's a lot of work to be done. (And just in case you were asking about an L&L steam client, pretty sure that's not happening?)
I don't think that's going to happen (or maybe it already did when Cardhunter Joe left to work on L&L). This is @Jon's game, and he's not working on L&L.
Actually it is a great time to join the game is as active as ever and it is much easier to build an inventory than it was in the past. I know the prospect of playing on a tablet is enticing but the 2 games are already different in form and will likely be more different by the release of L&L. My guess is L&L will be more streamlined and lack the depth of CH.
I am curious will L&L require you to be online all the time or will the campaign be playable off-line. I am a commuter with an unreliable 4G connection and prefer to be able to play games without having to worry about the connection dropping.
We haven't made any determinations on that yet. Right now, the game requires a connection at all times. That may change closer to launch, but it's low on our To Do list.
The thing I dislike most about CH is that the singleplayer requires an internet connection. It's a travesty! And it's gross that so many singleplayer games require an internet connection these days (looking at you, Blizzard). I speak strongly, and with my tongue firmly in my cheek, but seriously please let the offline content be played, well, offline
While I strongly hate the "you need to be online all the times" trend which has been going on (and growing! ) in the Gaming Industry as of late, I can see why CH can't let players play SP content w/o an internet connection. Making the game playable offline means the client would have to generate and store loot (along with all of the other sensible data) locally, on your own system. Which is going to open serious possibilities for all sorts of hackery: in a Client-Server scenario, the Server simply cannot trust the Client, it's as simple as that. This wouldn't be much of a problem, of course, if your heroes/loot were not shared between SP and MP. Without the server acting as the only authoritative source of data, you would end up with people messing with local files, basically leading to malicious users generating any wanted item out thin air. So yeah, I love the ability to play my games offline. But I think it was worth pointing out the ability to play L&L offline would likely imply you can't be allowed to use your SP collection in any MP mode available. Maybe this is an approach @DF Jason and the rest of the L&L team is not dismissing just yet? Maybe L&L is not gonna have MP at all?
I have of course considered this possibility but I am sure there are ways to prevent it... but i can also imagine they are difficult to implement and certainly not foolproof. I don't mind PC games being online as my assumption is that most computers are online all of the time, but I guess I will just have to stick with tactical RPGs and -GASP- casual King games, for my commute.
A solution to the hacking issue would be to make offline earned items (and earned gold for selling them) available for play only at offline single-player. Online SP and MP earned items/gold would be interchangeable.
Hi, I'm not sure this is the right place to ask that but since someone talked about the Steam client... When the steam client will be available, will the account transfer to steam or will we loose all our progress ?
As far as i know you will just be able to log-in like normal and continue your progress (but dont trust me i am not 100% sure)
Pretty sure you'll be able to associate your regular CH account to your Steam identity, similarly to how that works when you play on Kong. @Flaxative or @Jon will likely be able to confirm/deny this
That's what they have said multiple times in the past, so I don't see why it would be different. Shame that they went with the Humble Bundle now instead of waiting til a Steam release -- any Steam games on Humble Bundle get a ton more people opting in. As for online / offline -- L&L can have both in theory. If I was a designer on the game I'd make specific content that can be played offline -- such as puzzles and challenges -- that always reward set items when first completed. Someone could hack it to auto win them all, but the amount of loot they would unlock would be minor and not farmable. At least that's a way to have offline content and not have it be abusable. There are a ton of things that a standalone product like L&L can offer in its re-development that being split from CH could be a really good thing. I just hope that they consider that and improve on the formula instead of just making it simply mobile friendly / geared towards the mobile market.
The Steam client will basically just be a wrapper for the game as it exists in your browser, so you'll log in as normal. Maybe it'll be a bit fancier than that but I'm 100% sure existing accounts will be usable.
Thanks guys for the answer. Well I'm personally glad they did it though, because that's how i found the game. The trailer on the HB page looked great so i tried the game for a day and then went with the 12$ tier just for this game.
