General observations: Pro Overall I've seen a lot more pod play for quick draw than with past leagues, it is not unusual for all 5 players in my pods to be active. This may be the "shiny new thing" syndrome, but I think it's also partially due to a general enjoyment of this mode of play. I've gotten multiple comments from opponents about "I love this style," something I have gotten from very few leagues. Con I've seen a few people in chat not like quick draw, but no more comments than I see with most leagues. In my mind this falls under the not-everyone-is-going-to-like-everything category. Overall I think Quick Draw is a rousing success, I'd love for it to have its own active queue during leagues' downtimes but I understand not wanting to spread the player base out over too many things. I'm sure many people have different tweaks/changes that they'd like to see in quick draw, but I just wanted to post and say in the big picture, I think it's a major hit.
Yes. In the scenario editor, use the tag "quickDraw" (without quotes, case sensitive) to make it happen. You can even play Quick Draw against the AI, which is just as pathetic as you'd expect.
I like QD. A good change can be choose 8 cards instead of 7, limit traits to 2 per unit and add a basic racial move to the deck. Because a lot of cycling provides a lot of quality card advantaje.
Are you saying put a racial move in the deck in addition to the one drawn automatically? And is this the 8th card? Or do you actually want a 9 card deck? What would be your reason for it? It seems to just aid elves and handicaps dwarves for no particular reason. I actually think 7 cards is about what you want, the draft is fun but I don't think it really should go longer.
I edited that post. Yeah, maybe the basic move is not necessary, but the idea is to make the decks a bit longer. 8 cards should be fine, and 2 traits max.
I think the 20 minute timer is way too long. Picking cards should only take about 2 minutes once you've gotten a feel for the format, and 20 minutes just lets players slowroll too easily. Quick Draw should be exactly what its name suggests: fast.
It's ridiculous, and getting to the point where I am starting to not want to play the league anymore either, even though it can be great fun. Every game I've played today there has been at least a 6 minute disparity in clock timers. While I can't expect anyone to play as fast as I can, 20 minutes for each player is a very long time. 10 minutes seems to be the right number to me, preferably shorter.
10 minutes?? Are you serious? It takes an average of 4-5 minutes just to draft. And what if both players got mainly control card choices? How is that match ending in 10 minutes? You need to think that the clock should work for any combination of characters and cards. Of course that a melee vs melee match will finish quickly and 15 minutes should be fine for it, but there aren't all matches like that. There are certain matches where you really need to think all your moves, specially against a good opponent. No, please. 20 minutes is fine.
League games are not too serious. It wouldn't be bad if we had to play faster and sometimes (not too often but sometimes) couldn't think as long as we'd like to.
Is that 6 minute disparity after the draft portion or the entire match? If the draft itself is taking too long, a timer for picks could be implemented where cards are autopicked if time elapses.
And that should be indicated in the description of the league. If I read something like "in this league the clock will be your main enemy" or something like that, I know that it isn't going to be for me, that it's thought for another type of player and I'll be fine with that. But Quick Draw wasn't thought with the possibility of matches ending by time, and I think that spirit should be preserved. I have had tons of matches ending with less than 5 minutes in both clocks, so 20 minutes isn't something excessive.
A lot of people take 5 minutes to draft. Also worth noting that the only people complaining about this are a couple super players. If enough folks raise their voices, we'll consider shortening the timer, but I want to step in and say that the clock's pretty reasonable as far as we can tell.
I'll add my opinion that I think the timer is fine as it stands - simply put there's a "normal" 3-on-3 match and a draft on top of that, its just going to take more time than a match by itself. I also think that Jacques makes a good point that all team compositions have to be accounted for. Lastly, one can learn the cards in a fixed deck league, one can build a familiarity with one's own builds - these allow for faster play, but the first game with a new build, not to mention a build that was just put together through a draft, rather than by the standard means, may take players longer to play than a build they're more familiar with.
I only take ~2-3 minutes of attentive time to pick, because I know my strategy for picks as soon as I've seen which characters are on the board. There are maybe 3 individual cards that can alter my strategy if they turn up early on. I don't mind the draft taking long, though, as I just browse webcomics while waiting, though it runs my clock down a tiny bit (~5 minutes to pick).
