I would your opinion about a kind of league idea. No need to discuss how hard or easy it is to code. Entry Fee: 2k gold OR 40 pizza After registring, two buttons appear under the league icon: play a game and temporary keep. If you try to start a game right away, system will notify you that you have to set a party first, that is done in the temporary keep. In the keep, people have access to 3 copies of every character possible for a total of 27. For the items, everyone get the content of 50 simple chests + 50 ornate chests + 1 epic chest. They will have to make the best party possible with those items. Then it's played as usual and people can change their party as much as they want between the games by getting back to the temporary keep. Once the league is over, prizes are handled: 1st: figure + tbd 2-5: tbd And people get to keep all the items they had opened in the 101 chests. Pros: -even beginners can win with the luck of opening good items -veterans can feel frustrated by how good were others items and how bad were theirs. But the veterans are smart and know that 100 chests = 1800 gold, means they get to buy an epic chest for 200 gold which is a good deal. So even if they don't get some good prizes, they're not losing either. -good money sink for the vets or beginners can get a bunch of new items for a cheap pizza price. -I used to love sealed and drafts when I played MtG and I am sure I am not the only one edit: if anyone want to test if this is viable with fresh test server accounts, I would be glad to try a sealed game.
Not sure if I'm 100% with you on the details/mechanics, but in general I love the idea of sealed deck play! If it doesn't happen by league, you could always see if the devs would let you run a tourney.
The problem is that if the system isn't automatised, people can easily cheat by opening more chests or using things from their actual collection.
Actually you have a point @Scarponi , just realised a tourney would be possible with low chances of cheating. I wouldn't mind running one or anyone could (don't hesitate Flax ). Here is how it should be done. First people register on the forum. For each registred people, I create a new test server account. On those accounts I buy the chests (can be something else with more epic chests and some magni as people wouldn't be able to keep the opened items) and I keep a track of all items of the account on a txt with the login and the password. 1 hour before the tourney starts, I send a PM to each registred player with the log-in and password of their test account. They have to prepare their team during that time. Then the tourney is normaly played and I randomly spectate some games to check if someone isn't using an item he shouldn't (or I can check the list if someone has a doubt). Notes: -registred people unfamiliar with the test server will have an account there that they will be able to use later for some testing. -I wouldn't cheat and give the best accounts to the people I like the most, the log-in will be related to the forum nick of the player and I wouldn't change anything. What about this?
Yeah there are definitely ways to run it as a tourney. I think your idea is plenty viable. Another one would be playing it as peasant and just randomly generating a "sealed deck" list for each player that they can only equip from (only the newest players would be unable to come up with the items on the list).
Brown chests are actually pretty worthless. From my VP hunting thread: if VP would be worth 1 000 000 gold (lol) and it would be the only item you're interested in, brown chests would still be worth less than 18 gold (only about 17). And VP is not worth 1M
Beginners and casual players don't have 2,000 gold to spend on things like this. Speaking for myself, if I spend a week farming gold, I get so burned out I need to spend at least a week doing nothing more than Loot Fairy. This is why I've only once had more than 2,000 gold even though I've played (nearly) every day since release.
I'm the same way. I can't even farm the Kobold Mines right now from doing it so much for 2 weeks. I'll still hit the Loot Fairy, though. I'd love a version of this for SP where I'd be challenged to finish the campaign with a random set up. I'd like to able to access it separately than my normal set of items and then at the end "earn" those items into my regular pool once I beat the campaign. I remember something like this being suggested way back when. I liked that proposal then and I'd like a SP option now.
I used to buy the brown chests as Randimar never agreed to sell me decent stuff. My last three sessions were for 3k gold twice then 5k gold. During each of the two 3k ones, I had one Huetotl's Firebrand (plus some other E-L). During the 5k one not a single L and only one E I didn't have. This one was my last one. I decided that I would buy (and I am) every crappy L Randy sells that I don't allready own (at least I see the collection growing this way). So it can be worth it, mostly when you have extra cash and nowhere to spend it. Also I remember spending 10k on brown chests the day AotA came out and I didn't regret it. So maybe such a league can be done to celebrate a new expansion. That's where the "OR 40 pizza" part takes place along with the figure for the first to justify it. I wouldn't mind if BM can get some more income. And I am not rich either, got 3.3k atm and I will most likely buy a crappy L at Randis (Spear Of St. Qaith) on friday unless I get one till then. Otherwise a MtG sealed is 1 starter + 2 booster if I can recall correctly. And 1 starter = 3 boosters so 1 sealed = 5 boosters. 1 booster = 1 rare, 3 uncommons, 11 commons so 1 sealed = 5 rares + 15 Uncos + 55 commons. So if the tourney is made, what about 5 epic chests + 15 Magni + 28 simple + 28 ornate for the sealed?
No Squidy, you missed my point. I meant that if you get 100 chest + 1 epic chests for 2000 gold then it's dumb to assume that you are basicly getting an epic chests for 200 gold. But I like to idea of sealed deck format, just price has to be lower than that
A lot of us buy brown chests for the same reasons. I bought about 500 last week and got no legendaries. A half hour opening chests and an hour and a half selling excess. It's a small step above dumping gold by buying all the items in all the shops, then selling them back at a loss, but it's the only game in town. I'll hold off buying more for a while in the hope we get a better deal on chests or a Sell Excess button. I'm not much on tourneys, but I could take an interest in this one.
Would definitely be in favor of something like this. On a related note, a draft league where players pass around jumbo chests (with limited time to pick) would also be fun.
If you didn't get to keep the cards (only the prizes) at the end you could drop the cost considerably.
Sealed is commonly played with 4 or 6 packs. I really enjoy this idea, but instead of opening chests you were given x amount of random items of each type in a temporary fashion (or permanent if the buy-in was priced accordingly).
It's a good idea, although I know it has been suggested in the past. Yes we can organize this and just into the test server; but the trick is getting enough people AND keeping them from cheating! Are you really going to sit there and open 100 chests times the number of players, recording all the items that come out? That will be difficult or impossible without outside help. Currently I'm leaning towards impossible. I think it would be possible (with a little help from Jon) to make say 16 accounts (ST1, ST2, ST3....) , gift the accounts with 3800 pizza each AND access to MP, and as you say, give out the accounts and passwords to the registrants at the start of the tournament, give people time to make their party, and just go for it. Let people open any chests they want (and possibly raid Randimars and the item shops) and see what they can come up with. It could be fun!
It isn't as difficult as you might think. Opening 100 chests per account would take some time, but the utilities @neoncat wrote make exporting the items into spreadsheets simple. Exporting and comparing the data after the matches would reveal changes. Not entirely foolproof, but I believe few players would stoop to cheating.
Okay I like the idea... a true test of skill and creativity. For the details here are my thoughts/questions Is this for fun, for prizes or bragging rights? I think prizes and bragging rights are what most people would be interested in. Should this be a single event or perhaps a season type of league? I think a season type of event would be awesome, Four weekly tournanments with points awarded for wins and tie breaker points awarded like leagues are now (opponents stars). With a max of 10 games per week or 4 if there is a limited time frame. Each week you would get a new deck. But for logisitcs I think a since event might be best. Entry fee.... 2,000 gold is rough and pizza really would narrow the field of players. I would recommend 500 gold and changing to a pizza league for the iteration if there is serious involvement. Chests and characters I think it should be more limited than the OP only 9 possible character 1 of each variety. Depending on the sealed deck style in MtG you would have to use the land cards you got which would dictate the possible decks you could make. Would not want it to be severe, just force people out of their comfort zone a little. I think the fun of sealed deck tourneys is that you are forced to play cards you normally would avoid. Having a limited amount of chests would be ideal. If you figure you need about 30 items and that you would need a to have a variety of types I would limit it to brown chests = 100 items (different brown chest have different numbers of items) and 4 gold chests and 1 purple. You might even have only 6 arcane items (for example) and be forced to go with the default cards like you might on a drawback quest if you want to play with 2 wiz. Maps I think the maps should be randomly assigned once players are matched to prevent people trying to cater their build to a particular map (e.g. roll out the barrels or death march). It should be a sub-set of the available PVP maps, perhaps 4-6 possible maps so people have an idea what they may be getting into.
