Community Balancing Act

I don't think there would ever come a point where a boycott of the game would be necessary. Eventually the devs would realize that having a player base that enjoys the game is better than having a player base that doesn't enjoy having to farm constantly just to feel like they can win a game or two once they pass the 1200 ELO threshold, and make adjustments accordingly.

If they don't? Well, then people would stop playing of their own volition. And once people stop playing, they stop paying. And then the game dies, and everybody loses.

This is quickly getting to ridiculous heights.

Sorry guys, and I mean this with all due respect, but I truly believe this is the worst possible way to handle such a subject as game balance.

What's that? Actually balancing the game?

    I agree!

I don't say I approve it, but I can understand Flaxative here. It's like with any other protest. You start by trying to talk things, to come to an agreement at all the possible stages . If you have tried that for a long period of time without any satisfactory answer (in this case, nine months have passed, it's not like we said that ns needed a nerf last week), then you take more drastic measures, like a strike or a boycott. Even if they don't want to ever nerf these or other cards, they should say so for respect to the players, so that we don't hope in vain or continue arguing about things that aren't going to be changed. I suppose they don't do that because many players may leave the game if they declared that.
Anyway, I think this thread is positive even if we don't arrive to an agreement, at least it' s one more attempt to try to catch the dev's eyes.

Is this just for ranked MP or does it include leagues too? If it's just ranked MP, you can add me to the list of people who won't use VP or Whirls. But I won't report anyone for using them. I will make some comments on other threads about how cards should be balanced better.

@Bandreus: I've seen worse. Remember that guy who was ENRAGED because a card game involves shuffling?

I rarely play MP anymore, but when I do I don't use WW. I'll probably still use it on league boards like Death March and Roll Out the Barrels.
Should I report myself each time, or just do kind of a daily thing?

The league boards necessitate it due to their incompatibility with Wall of Stone. I don't judge there, just talking about ranked PvP.

Would it be possible to design an MP map that was very unfriendly to whirls and nimble strike? That might be a way to change the current meta without requiring a lot of work from the devs. Maybe a much smaller map with lots of difficult terrain?

As the owner of two VPs I probably contribute. I'm happy to try a different build for a while as long as my guild leaders doesn't kick me out for negative contribution. ;)

Another game I played, Clash of the Dragons, suffered from something like this. The solution was to have an MP area that had rotating weekly build rules. Dunno how hard it would be. It would be cool to have a ranked MP with "no legendaries" or "only elves" or "anyone with a forum icon of a dog automatically wins".

There's no such thing as a map where Whirlwinds and VP aren't absurdly good. They are just that way by nature.

Hey everyone, I'm working on balance right now. I know there's a lot of frustration out there about these issues and I'll have more details about what we plan to do shortly.

In the meantime, please DON'T use the report function for this purpose. It's intended to be a community tool to manage things like abusive chat and stalling, not a way to protest game issues. The balance issues are our fault as developers, not the fault of anyone playing the game.

Feel free to post your concerns here on the forums (which we do pay attention to) and complain to your heart's content, but please don't take out your frustration on other players. If you want to encourage players not to use certain cards or items, that's your prerogative, of course, but please do so in a respectful way.

I will have more to say on balance issues soon.

Whirlwind is available in abundance, so that is not a problem.
So it comes down to Nimble Strike weapons like Lochaber and Vibrant. Lochaber is only epic, so you should get some after a while.
That leaves Vibrant Pain, which is a very awesome weapon and it should be. In every game you the items which are the best and if you obtain them it should make a difference.
I understand that players who get beaten by more effective builds don´t want that happening but this is a fact off all multiplayer games.

If you want to have fun without those cards, there are custom rules which even the odds, for example search for "Peasant".
So if you want to play for fun, play fun decks, if you want a huge e-peen with a high ranking accept that a "Friendship is Magic" deck build won´t cut it.
And as mentioned before, someone made a competition which lasts for months, where you have to be high ranked to get some rewards.

I like the "anyone with a forum icon of a dog automatically wins" bit. I have one ready in case it's implemented.

By getting a response from Jon, I think this thread has largely accomplished its purpose. We've got a direct confirmation by the Devs that they're working on balance changes right now. In that sense, Flax, I think your goals have been met already! And no one needed to report anyone!

I'm sure someone will still complain about it all but yeah, good job team. Also I think the lesson I need to learn here is never to offer rewards for competitions--really brings out the worst in folks. I'm sorry! The next peasant tournament won't even have a standings chart. :)

  18. Glad Jon stepped in here (and that a balance change is in the works). In the meantime, I am going to go ahead and report people for playing Barge, because it's rude to barge in on someone.

I think there should be prizes for participation, that way newer players don't feel they have no chance of collecting special costumes because all of the higher-ranked players keep winning them.

I totally agree with this. The fact that Jon answered means that they are not oblivious to the player's feedback about this matter, and those are great news.
