Tonight I finally got to the third part of that High Mountain Pass one with the Ogres. Its been very frustrating. I finally made it past the second battle and then I only got one shot at the third battle before it offered to let me pay $$ to revive. I thought I was supposed to get three attempts but it seems very often I only get one or two. How many trys should I get at each battle? What will cause them to decrement (besides tonight's server down which was incredibly bad timing for me apparently). I often have to stop in mid game and pick it up again later. Should I not play unless I have several hours to dedicate to playing? Thanks, E
You get three tries per adventure, and defeats on the first map don't count. Closing your browser in the middle of battle counts as a loss, but closing on the loot screen doesn't.
Something to make a distinction about before I answer. A battle is a single map that you play until you kill the monsters or gain enough victory points to move on, an adventure is the set of battles that are packaged together that you're trying to beat to move on in the campaign. An adventure is comprised of 2-5 battles - or possibly just one for some level 1 adventures. You get 2 replays (totaling 3 attempts) per an adventure for all the battles that make up that adventure. Thus if you make it to the last battle without using any replays you'll still have 2 available, but if on the 2nd battle you die and have to replay it, then you only have 1 replay left for that, and all the remaining battles in that adventure. If you die on the first adventure it doesn't use any of your replays though as it assumes you could just quit the adventure and start over. You can stop between battles and still pick up where you left off without losing replays, but if you quit mid-battle (close browser, put the computer to sleep, have the server go down for maintenance) it will cost you one of your replays. So as long as you have time to complete a single battle, by all means keep playing!
Ok, I thought that it was 2 retries per battle. This seems a little too 20th century for a PvE game. I like difficult content but I don't like repeating content to get back to the part I am stuck on. Thanks for updating my understanding. I will make sure I always have time to finish the battle I am on, primetime server downtime not withstanding, and will keep this limitation in mind when deciding what to do in the future if I continue to struggle with the content. Also, in quests you don't get any retries. What would be an example of a quest? I don't think I have seen anything other than "regular" adventures and "treasure" adventures
Quests will unlock after you beat the last regular adventure of the campaign. They're opportunities to go back and play every adventure over again with certain handicaps making it harder. Some of them are at a level MUCH more difficult... but of course by then you have better items too. Just FYI - some quests have restrictions on items, so if you get items for loot that don't look real powerful, still don't sell them unless you have lots of copies of them. You may need them for quests. I know you mentioned you don't like repeating content, but one other aid, if you're having trouble with an adventure, going back a couple adventures to replay them can get you more items that might help and can help you level up giving you more max health. Also there are plenty of threads on the forums about how to get by specific adventures, so if you need help - just search the forums!
After you finish the last adventure you unlock the possiblility to do the quests, those are the same adventures with special restrictions. Like No party deaths, Use only Priests, Party has one health, Equip only items with a Drawback card and so on. You can only finish them once and they will give you at least one rare item.
Completing the single player campain by defeating the Yellow Dragon (I think, unless it's one of the other lvl 17 module Cardstock II) will unlock those quests. All adventures have 3 quests minimum each except for level 1 ones which got none. The default quests for all are: -"No Party death" where you have to complete all battles without getting one of your characters knocked out. -"Party has one health" where all your guys start with a maximum HP of 1! -"Equips only items with a drawback card" where all your equipments have to have one of those "bad" black card. Some adventures may have more quests such as level reduction, use only priests, use only human warriors...
You can always pay 15 for 3 new attempts, starting from the part of the adventure you died on, and any retries on the first map doesn't count towards your total retries (as mentioned above). This makes the "failure state" a little less punishing, since you can sink some gold into further attempts.
You know, part of the reason I was so frustrated was I thought I had to spend "pizza" to get another shot. I don't know why, its not like I did not stare at the screen a million times. Now that I know its just 15 gold and you get three more tries.. well.. problem solved. Remarkably cheap, really, when looked at that way. I will see treasure loot entirely differently now. I beat the ogres (without paying the gold) and went on to do another (where I did pay up once because I hate chasing frost demons around). While I may not pay up if I am getting slammed on the second battle it seems a good way to keep me going on the last or second to last battle. I am disinclined to look for help on specific adventures in the forums (as opposed to mechanics) since part of the fun is figuring it out. Anyway, thanks to everyone who contributed to my understanding of replays and quests. E
That's the spirit! Some adventures are inevitably going to be more tough than others, depending on your play-style and decks. Just try and adapt your composition according to the enemy forces weaknesses and you shall prevail all oppositions
Indeed, 15g is what you will get from selling random garbage from a successful campaign anyway. So it's not anything to fret about.
