See? It seems like a setup right? I thought so too, but none of the other devs would own up to it. Then I checked the registration date. The profile was created in 2011, but according to our project logs we didn't add Gary to the game until March 2012. In fact we clearly hadn't even thought about him by then, 'cos in January 2012 we added the proto-Gary generic wizard guy whose job was to point at stuff on the screen and tell you how to play. Gary, believe it or not, started out as a tutorial. Or so we thought.
Thence comes a problem. He's listed as born in the 90's. Is it therefore impossible for him "to be Gary" because he's way too young for the referenced D&D era? Or is his youth symbolic of the eternal youth--or naïveté--of the nerd?
Melvin's name was inspired by two films. The Toxic Avenger, and Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey. Virtual high-fives for who can explain the connections.
Well, Melvin is the mop boy who turns into the Toxic Avenger. Also...was that Death's name in Bogus Journey? I haven't seen either film in YEARS...
Actually, I believe Melvin wasn't a person, but rather an act. As in, 'A melvin'. Or perhaps, 'getting a melvin'. However, you are close with the death reference... I shall not post the details here, family forum and all =)
WOOHHHUUU IT (he) LIVES. .....Toxic Avenger, and Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey.... Giving Death a "Melvin" was certainly hilarious. For some unknown to me reason I have little memory of the Toxic Avenger. I think that movie was banned where I lived and later everyone said it was so stupid that I never got around to watch it. Pegwin said it best with >>> Garception?
