The thin line between a challenging and a frustrating game

I like playing challenging games. I think it's fun. Unfortunately Card Hunter quickly becomes less and less fun. In multiplayer and especially in single player.

The idea behind the single player campgain is that You can win by adapting to the current map and using appropriate tools. Unfortunately the RNG system is taking all the planning and preparing out of it all. Sadly the randomness is not all that hurts. (i love TCG games and i know randomness is part of the game but here.. something just doesn't feel right)

The real struggle begins from about level 8 up. You are beginning to encounter more and more enemies. And each of these enemies is a match to each of your heroes alone. Insane amount of armor cards, huge attacks that can kill your character in 2 turns and outdamage anything your warrior has (or will ever have). The RNG does not affect the enemy mobs - they always get the same godly card while your elf wizard always gets 5 movement cards.

And it all gets worse the more you progress. I just managed to unlock a lvl 12 zombie adventure. With 10 zombies in it, each of them can stun you for a turn or poison 3 you for 2 turns or bludgeon 5 me to death. I just laughed and presses X on my browser.. The sad thing is that is not really worth it in the end. Aside the experience, the loot is hardly worth all the nerves wasted even in the gold chest in the end. I am yet to see a single epic or legendary item so far with mostly common trash. And having underwhelming items doesn't exactly helps with the adventures.

So yeah.. the game is quite fun in general with great ideas.. until the giant wall of frustration appears.. which is a shame.

Well, if you're getting that many movement cards, then you should really change your gear a bit. Remember, your characters will always draw one racial movement card each turn so you don't necessarily need any more from your items. So pick boots and skills that offer something else.

Yep, it's not a good idea to let the zombies hit you often. So use team moves to stay out of reach, block cards to stop their attacks and try to kill them from afar with magic and reach attacks.

You can and should switch your items for every new adventure. You can even hire additional heroes. If some enemies feel too hard in melee, try the fight with three wizards :)

The game does indeed start to get hard around level 8. Each of the enemies is a match to your heroes, but usually only if you try and beat them at their own game. Insane amounts of armour cards? You could try equipping your wizard with some acid attacks or use penetrating melee attacks. Huge attacks? You could try loading up on block cards or use attacks with a range of more than 1. 5 movement cards? Distract the enemy by exploiting the zone of control then slowly back away. They can't hurt you if they can't hit you and then they'll have to discard their godly attacks at the end of the round (or keep them and discard their armour).

I also wouldn't call the common items trash, some of them are really useful. I'm a particular fan of the Burning Bangle, and really quite like my Acrobat's Blade and priest's Glowing Hide Armor.
