Sometimes an uncommon/common worth more than a rare. I remember than in V:TES some uncommons/commons are used more than some rares. It depends, obviously, to what kind of deck you want to make. In general a rare is more powerful than a UC (not to mention a C), but there are exceptions to this.
That had more to do with what the cards did than anything else. Though a lot of good cards were common/uncommon in that game, often the base building blocks. There were still several rares you'd want as many as possible of, in the deck that used them(like oh say disarm or behead in a brujah deck). Also, for several rares the reason you didn't use many of them were that they were unique masters/locations that you could only have 1 of in play, ever(though you often wanted 2-3 of these if they were important), or votes that could only be played once per game. I miss V:TES... still have my cards, but noone to play with.
As another V:TES player, it'll be a nice refreshing change to play a game that doesn't involve throwing lots of money to have the card-variety to be able to be competitive. Especially when, in some places, the Common/Rare labelling was so off (I'd love a few more Deep Song cards, since it's rated as a Common card, but they're ridiculously hard to get hold of at a sensible price). In response to your "no-one to play with" comment, Kaerius, if you're not already on there, have a look at http://vekn.net/index.php/forum to see if there are any local groups in your area...
I already know that the nearest regular VTES group is about 200 miles away. I knew everyone in my town that played, and they've either stoped playing, or moved to other towns. I'm not about to do a 3 hour commute to play. Btw I know that group and have played with it as well.
I'm kinda lucky, in that my local VTES (and other games) group is actually based in the place I work, there's a bunch of about 8 of us who usually get together once a week, to play either VTES or one of the many board-games we own between us... Can't be good to own the cards and not have a local group to actually use them with, though! One of the reasons I suggested the VEKN forums, though, is because they also arrange online games through there, too (via JOL, Lackey, or a new platform called OCTGN that's just been released). If you don't have anyone local to you, have a look at playing online until something does turn up in your area?
I played an online game once through VEKN, back then it was done by email, and a turn took about a week(this was years ago).
Things have come along a bit, since then. JOL is the current online interface of choice (I believe), and that uses a browser-based interface with various commands typed into the built-in CLI. You still get slow games, as people play when they're available (as opposed to sitting down at a table), but you do also get quick games on there. The game itself may have been dropped (although there are rumours of interested companies looking at it again), but it'd be a shame to drop what's been a great player-base that's been built up over the years...
