So I was so looking forward to playing Card Hunter, until the latest blog post where they showed some of the character artwork. Did the artists really need to make the two frumpy drwaven/gnome? female characters show nipple? Come on...

If they decide to fix the inappropriate art I will still play this game, otherwise I am out.

I understand your point and that wasn't the intent of our art direction. I'll discuss this with the art team.

Thank you for your consideration. :)

I'd prefer we kept the artist's original vision because I hate to see any artist compromise their integrity for any reason.

I really don't see that the artwork is so 'inappropriate' that it'd mean not playing the game. Anyone who's seen any 'fantasy' game wouldn't be shocked at what's in Cardhunter, surely?

    Wall of text, sorry:

To each their own, if they keep it then they keep it, their choice. I would never presume to write Blizzard and ask them to make Diablo 3 less violent, but the fact stands that I won't let my children play it because of the violence. The truth of the matter is I don't want to play a game where you can see character's nipples, as simple as that. It isnot something I look for in a game. I am not asking for a total rehaul of the game mechanics, I am not asking them to change the theme from old school fantasy to realistic sci-fi, heck I am not even offering game play suggestions. Don't you find it a bit ironic that I am actually not asking for any part of the game to change except for four lines (literally) ... and there are a slew of others who offer real game changing suggestion and they are praised for trying to make the game better...

[Suggestion]: Make a thief class... "we agree that would be cool!" ( Which I happen to think as well...)
[Suggestion]: Make a summoner class... "That would be wicked awesome!"
[Suggestion]: Make an anthropomorphic (animal/mineral) race..."uhhh... that would be cool as well!"
[Request]: Could you please get rid of the nipples off the artwork, I think it is gross. " I hate to see any artist compromise their integrity for any reason."

@MacLeod I am not trying to attack you personally, so don't take it that way. I just find your comment a little... naive, and want to make sure you understand that asking for art changes is not asking the artist to compromise. I am a freelancing artist, and in fact almost applied for the gig through Cardhunter, but didn't because of other time commitments. I am asked on a daily basis to make changes to my artwork, and I do. An example of this was I was working on a card game for a client and one of their cards was titled "drought" so I made a scene with a desert, tumble weed, and a cow skull (think dustbowl).

The client came back and said that the card game was suppose to be for all ages and thought the cow skull a bit dark. I thought it was fine (obviously hence I put it in) but I took it out of the scene with a smile on my face. The client had different ideas and opinions then me, and I respected those opinions and didn't feel like he was compromising my artistic integrity.

Also (not to beat a dead horse) but do you know how many different iterations the artist/artists went through to get the game in the state it is right now? I can list at least two other art styles they tried before coming to their most current one. What about all those major changes? Do these artists have no integrity because they sold themselves short and made changes that were requested, or did these changes make the game what it is today?

@skip_intro Your right, the word inappropriate was inappropriate. Let me change that to... icky. :)

I guess I could have saved myself all the time writing by simply saying, I am not demanding anything. Just requesting, and hoping. :)

    Well, if we're making requests...

Please don't change the artwork, it's neither 'gross' nor 'icky', in my opinion.

There's nothing that would render the game inappropriate for any age group that could understand the rules. Anyone young enough not to be able to understand the rules wouldn't infer anything from the artwork either.

I personally think the Chain Mail Bikini line of fantasy wear is ridiculous from a THAC0 point of view, but wouldn't class the artwork being discussed in the same category by a long shot.

Do you want his guy to put his shirt on? Or is male nipplage not gross or icky? I'm with Michael Stipe on this one, censor all or censor none!

Dude, you can't just go around posting pictures of a guy without his shirt on... what were you thinking? ;)

Agree with the chain mail bikini.

Regardless of what you say, this is pretty indicative of an insult. That said, I've made no attempts to shine my words in a better light.

The example you cited (paying employer requesting change) doesn't match the reality of our current situation (customer requesting change to a completed work). This difference alone requires me to disregard the majority of your post.

Additionally, as skip_intro implied, double standards make for a weak argument. All nipples are gross and must be covered or the art remains as-is. :p And yes, I don't think the art will pose an issue for any ages. What could pose an issue should be the violence inherent in the fiction. Not that I think the fantasy violence is an issue but it is interesting that you focus on sex and not murder. This ties in with the next paragraph.

Personally, I'd like to delve further into this issue of nipples being "icky." This eludes to something else that is deeply wrong with the world at hand but is also connected to censorship and the way that it is ruining our youth. However, this is not the place for such discussion but I'll leave you with this paragraph to decipher for yourself my meanings.

You basically said "Fix it or I'm not playing" which is about as demanding verbiage as you can get, I think - so the clarification is appreciated.

I am curious though: Are you really not going to play this game because of two (covered) nipples?

Also, for my curiosity... The nipples I can kind of understand, but what's wrong with the dwarf/gnome?

Talk about a storm in a teacup. The original poster is a posterchild for the word prude, in the extremest form. We're talking about a cartoonish drawing with the little nipple bump being drawn as showing through the cloth of her clothing, and not in the see-through fashion even.

Would probably go into berserker rage at the thought of (his/her) kids going to an art museum.

Kaerius, you are being hostile. I just checked your past posts to make sure this behavior isn't intentional; I reminded myself you are not a troll by any means, so I hope I can say this and have it be viewed as constructive.

"Posterchild," "prude," "extremest form." You selected words that are more hostile than needed. No, there is not much "extreme" about this post. This is a normal conversation that people have about today's fantasy game (or any videogame) art, e.g., "Why do all the female characters in WoW wear a bikini?"

I stayed out of it until now because I didn't particularly feel like being called names, myself.

Hey, let's all chill out about this please! There's room for all sorts of opinions, from "I hate it" to "I love it".

Female characters are sometimes rather strangely depicted in this genre. One example is the "chainmail bikini" phenomenon mentioned, i.e. female characters wearing inappropriately revealing outfits that aren't practically protective. That's obviously not the case with the dwarf warrior image that we're discussing here, but it is odd that she is depicted with visible nipples whereas none of the male characters are. There's no real reason for that and I've directed our art team to change it.

Interestingly, our general art direction is to evoke very early fantasy (chiefly D&D) art. A lot of this art featured gratuitously revealing female outfits or completely naked women. However, that's one aspect of the period that we've chosen not to reproduce.

As an example, of why I want to follow this direction - one of our dev team is playing the game with his seven year old daughter. I want her to feel as welcomed to the game as anyone else. I don't want to suggest to her that female characters in the game are there only because of their sexuality.

Anyway, that's part of my personal vision for the game art. I just haven't been quite on the ball with making sure that everything followed the direction I had in mind, so I take full responsibility for this.

Feel free to disagree, but let's continue this conversation in mutually respectful manner please.

Seriously man??? Get over yourself....Dont let the door hit you on the way out!!! IME, people like you have a tendency to nitpick and ruin anything that happens to catch there eye. Women, REAL WOMEN, like the ones youve probably never touched, have nipples. Men have nipples, albeit smaller ones. Kids see nipples all the time. There is NOTHING wrong with nipples. Something most def wrong with you though if you are offended by seeing two covered nipple dimples.

Does this mean that the barbarian art seen above is going to be changed as well?

Nothing needs to be changed at all....In fact, if I see these guys are caving over something like this, it really makes me question the integrity of the entire game. Not good guys, not good.

No, for the same reason that men and women's swimsuits are configured differently.

Not trying to be flippant - my point is that our culture views male and female bodies quite differently.

I'm genuinely sorry you feel that way. I hope you'll give the game a chance anyway.

I deliberately used harsh strong language, because that's what I felt was an appropriate response to someone trying to censor the game to such a level. It's blatantly ridiculous. I was tempted to call it PG3, but 3 year olds would know a nipple is where they drink mommy's milk. By the time they start thinking of sex, a clothed cartoon nipple isn't going to get their jollies off anyway. It's puritanical prudism, and yes it is extreme. It's funny how the same people that complain about that don't mind depictions of someone getting their head bashed in. Morality has nothing to do with it.

I'm just gonna say one thing: They're changing it.

I refuse to get involved in this conversation because it's becoming entirely nonsensical, but I'll give you a good question to think about. Why are you still fighting if there isn't a problem anymore?

I understand where redcap is coming from, but why all the hate for speaking his opinion? He doesn't want to see nipple bumps. I personally was slightly disapproving of it myself BUT only because it didn't seem to fit the theme that the other characters had. It was an odd ball. I didn't care that there were nipples, I just didn't like that they were the only nipples.

Regardless of that fact, it's over. GG. Stop arguing. This is becoming the center point of the forum and it's going to turn new players away because the current community is arguing over cartoon character depictions. If you want to support Blue Manchu and get a decent community going, we need to quit being so shallow. If something bothers you, say so, but don't down that person because they have a different view of the world. Let's try to be a little more accepting, alright?
