I agree, flooding the game with too many user-made items would be bad.

But putting things in perspective: CH has close to 2k items at this point. Plus ~200 new items are added about once a year with each new expansion.

Even if you added 5 items each month, that'd only be a tiny fraction of the total.

That being said though, you oughta do what you feel is best for the game.

It's worth reminding Aloyzo's items are not thoroughly tested, so adding them in smaller batches is probably preferable.

I remember somebody making the suggestion of a Flaxative-chosen user submitted item and community-chosen item each month. This seems like a nice compromise; as long as the community doesn't choose an item that is clearly against the contest's purpose. This of course would result in you overruling that choice :p

Or letting the community vote the item from Flaxative's shortlist.

Design by community is very dangerous. Maybe have elected representatives come together and choose... but that is a bit over complicating things.

Honestly, as long as the item doesn't dramatically change the meta or lead to some power creep I don't see any real problem in having them. I'd just wish we'd get a few more "basic items that are obviously missing" before we moved to "weird monster cards" like we have... it seems weird we still have an item slot that goes empty due to not having any drawbacks for it...

Or that there are certain items themes missing for a wide variety of token types (no Cold staff without a Gold Token cost).

I'm working on one for the current month that contains Blizzard Breath and is a 2 blue token staff. Seems like a double niche that is missing (purging wizard + low token cold staff for wizards). However, I doubt it will be selected due to the notion "the first month had a staff" or something.

Some of Flax's decisions seem a bit arbitrary. In the last video explaining his decisions he was like "I'm not really looking for X item type this month" despite the fact it wasn't in the requirements... like if you're going to discredit items due to a certain item type why not put it in the restrictions?

I totally agree on design-by-community being a horrible thing. I wouldn't even trust any "elected representative". Like, in the slightest.

People is so much ready to criticize the actual game developers every time a chance arises, imagine what would happen if non-developers would be given a choice.

(And, to be honest, the community is already given some limited power over which items are picked: items with lots of likes are more likely to be noticed and picked by Flax, rising the chances those can end up into the game).

It sounds to me like he's looking for Halloween seasonal items this time. Possibly only available while the shop is open. Just a guess, though.

They wouldn't only be available while the shop is open. Limiting items with unique things based on seasons is heavily against everything that's happened so far. I'd say he would favor Halloween items because it will be in the Halloween shop, but not ONLY there (like the other cosmetic items).

Oh, I just saw he is publishing 5 (FIVE!) of the items with potential Monster Cards? That does seem a bit excessive to inject essentially completely new cards into the mix... I'd assume only a couple will have Monster Cards though so yeah...

Would be nice if you could make multiple submissions in a month with multiple winners. Just going through the monster articles I found lots of interesting ideas that would fit similar items but give it slightly more flair. Oh well.

    Your restraint is admirable.

@Stexe @Sir Veza the items will be in Halloween store AND in loot tables, yes. Monster themed because of Halloween. And Stexe, I'm not going to pick an item that fills a hole in the game if it's a less cool design than something else. It's BM's job to patch those holes if and when we can, not the playerbase's. IDK if you read my long explanation of the point of the contest?

I wish you'd given us more lead time so we could have had a chance to try to balance these cards before they became available to players. As it is, about half the monster cards can't be used because they are so very obviously unbalanced. Could we at least be allowed to suggest a new quality and rarity as part of our submission?

It won't disqualify you automatically. I don't think it's a safe bet for being selected but in the grand scheme of things it won't hurt you. ;)

Is there a place to talk about potential submissions? I know you don't want them here, but where?

The smithy is where you can discuss them, or you can make a new thread.

@Rainingrecon - There was a request for a tutorial on how to make smaller cardart pictures. I have decided to give one!

First, go to the Cardhuntria Wiki and find the card you want. For this example, I'll be using Push The Button.

If you click on the card image for Push the Button on it's page, it will take you to another page just for that image. For example, from the Push The Button page, it will take you from http://wiki.cardhuntria.com/wiki/Cards/Push_the_Button to http://wiki.cardhuntria.com/wiki/File:Push_the_Button.jpeg. From there, just under the large image, you'll see a link, usually in the format of cardname.jpeg, that if you copy the address it takes you to, will allow you to insert card images into your thread.

This is something a good number of people have already figured out, and is the process by which people put full-sized images into their thread. Now we get to the clever part.

When I copy Push the Button's image link, I get the address http://wiki.cardhuntria.com/images/0/0b/Push_the_Button.jpeg. All of these images are formated very similarly, in that they follow the following pattern:
    http://wiki.cardhuntria.com/images/0/0b/Push_the_Button.jpeg
    http://wiki.cardhuntria.com/images/d/d6/Impaling_Stab.jpeg
    http://wiki.cardhuntria.com/images/8/82/Penetrating_Stab.jpeg
    http://wiki.cardhuntria.com/images/b/b7/Purging_Strike.jpeg
    http://wiki.cardhuntria.com/images/0/09/Flaring_Laser.jpeg
(So far as I can tell, there is no descernable pattern in the "x/xy" code after "images/". That said, if you mess with it, it won't work, so make sure that stays the same.)

In order to make it into a smaller thumbnail, you're going to change it in the following ways:

    http://wiki.cardhuntria.com/images/thumb/0/0b/Push_the_Button.jpeg/150px-Push_the_Button.jpeg
    http://wiki.cardhuntria.com/images/thumb/d/d6/Impaling_Stab.jpeg/150px-Impaling_Stab.jpeg
    http://wiki.cardhuntria.com/images/thumb/8/82/Penetrating_Stab.jpeg/150px-Penetrating_Stab.jpeg
    http://wiki.cardhuntria.com/images/thumb/b/b7/Purging_Strike.jpeg/150px-Purging_Strike.jpeg
    http://wiki.cardhuntria.com/images/thumb/0/09/Flaring_Laser.jpeg/150px-Flaring_Laser.jpeg

So you add "thumb/" after the ".../images/", and then "/150px-cardname.jpeg" after ".../cardname.jpeg"

    and this:
    becomes this:

Bonus points if you can identify the item I used to get all these cards.
    Happy hunting!

Or you could just right-click the small card image on the wiki and choose Copy Image Location (Firefox) or an equivalent command.
The small image is shown on the page of the card (or an item containing the card) in the wiki. You can try this from the example link below.

I just find it easier to read the big cards. I'd rather use big cards than squinting to read all the cards I don't know (especially with all the weird monster card choices this time around).

If Hand of Melvelous didn't exist and someone submitted it, how likely would it be to get chosen, considering it's really not particularly thematic of the great wizard?
